POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Vassar College Field Hockey team used two first quarter goals to win its fourth Liberty League contest, 2-1, against Skidmore on Friday night. Sophomore
Gianna Trunfio (Clinton, NY) tallied three points on the night as the Brewers moved to 10-4 overall and 4-2 in conference play.
Vassar put the pressure on early in the first quarter as the Brewers earned three quick penalty corners with Trunfio getting an early shot saved by Thoroughbreds' defender Lauren Ruggiero. The Brewers scored its first goal of the game just three and a half minutes in as senior
Avery Bauman (Westbrook, CT) knocked one home off an assist from Trunfio.Â
The Brewers kept the offensive pressure up as Trunfio scored her team-leading eighth goal of the season at the 12:18 mark of the first quarter following a feed from junior
Hailey Brigger (San Diego, CA) to give Vassar a 2-0 lead.
Skidmore kept the Vassar lead at two as Brigger's shot at the 2:38 mark of the second quarter was saved by defender Gillian Maher. The Thoroughbreds cut the Vassar lead to one off a penalty corner as Ruggiero took the injection from Maher and knocked it in the left corner about five minutes into the second quarter.
Carrie Hughes had a shot fired in for Skidmore at the beginning of the second half but junior goalkeeper
Sarah Dumaresq (Barnstable, MA) made a key save to keep the Vassar lead. The Brewers had a corner a few minutes later and Thoroughbreds' goalkeeper Victoria Bodnar turned away Bauman's shot to keep the contest at 2-1.
Skidmore was unable to register a shot in the final quarter as Vassar recorded three more penalty corners in the final period.
Trunfio finished with her eighth goal of the year and her first assist while Brigger tallied her team-leading fourth assist. Bauman's goal was her third of the year as three Brewers recorded three shots on the day. Dumaresq earned her 10th victory of the season and made one save for Vassar.
Hughes finished with a team-high two shots for the Thoroughbreds as Ruggiero picked up the lone goal and Maher earned the assist. Bodnar took the loss in net as she made two saves and the Skidmore defense had three.
The Brewers held a large lead in shots at 14-3 and also outshot Skidmore 7-2 on goal. Vassar also held the edge in penalty corners at 13-2.
Vassar will play its final Liberty League contest on Sunday afternoon when the Brewers head north to take on St. Lawrence. The contest with the Saints is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
