Field Hockey Falls In Overtime At William Smith

Dumaresq makes two saves in overtime for the Brewers

GENEVA, N.Y. - The Vassar College Field Hockey team fell in overtime on the road at William Smith, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon. Junior Sarah Dumaresq (Barnstable, MA) made two saves in the contest as the Brewers fell to 9-4 overall and 3-2 in Liberty League play.

The Brewers picked up its first penalty corner of the game at the 14:31 mark of the first quarter and the shot from sophomore Leilani Llamas (Grapevine, TX) was blocked by the Herons defense.

Following a penalty corner from William Smith early in the second quarter, sophomore Alexa Gwyn (Palo Alto, CA) had two shots saved halfway through the quarter with one being by Herons defender Lauren Jackson.

Vassar had three penalty corners in the third quarter and sophomore Hailey Brigger (San Diego, CA) had a shot turned away with six seconds left in the quarter by Jackson once again.

The Herons recorded its first shot off a penalty corner in the fourth quarter but the shot by Kate Breward was blocked. Senior Ella Pearl (San Francisco, CA) fired one on net three and a half minutes into the quarter and it was saved by Herons goalkeeper Kristen McCormick.

Vassar had a late push at the end of regulation on a penalty corner but back to back shots were blocked in front to send the contest to overtime.

Just one minute into the overtime period, William Smith's Sofia Patillo had a shot saved by Dumaresq but then the Herons picked up a penalty corner a minute later. After a shot from Rebecca Mantione was turned away, Libby Maxwell knocked one home on a feed from Mantione to give William Smith a 1-0 victory.

Pearl led the team in shots with five while Brigger tallied four. Gwyn and Pearl led the team with two shots on goal apiece. Dumaresq finished the match with two saves in the tough luck loss for Vassar.

Four players had a shot recorded for the Herons and McCormick picked up the win in goal with three saves. The Brewers held a 14-4 edge in shots and 5-3 im shots on goal. Vassar also held the edge in penalty corners at 8-3.

Vassar will return to action at home on Friday evening when they take on Skidmore. The Liberty League matchup with the Thoroughbreds is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at Weinberg Field.
