Women's Volleyball Completes Comeback Against St. Lawrence, Drops NIghtcap to Kean

Anthony-Brumfield's 18 kills leads Brewers to five set victory

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Vassar College Women's Volleyball team came back from a 2-0 deficit to earn a 21-25, 19-25, 25-23, 25-11, 15-9 Liberty League victory over St. Lawrence before falling in the second match to Kean 19-25, 17-25, 21-25. Sophomore Frannie Anthony-Brumfield (Hanover, VA) buried a career-high 18 kills in the victory as the Brewers move to 4-15 and 3-3 in Liberty League play.

The Saints scored the first six points of the first set before a kill from sophomore Hailey Hayes (Canyon Lake, TX) and a service ace from junior Maya Levine (Granby, MA) got the Brewers to within three. St. Lawrence ran its lead up to 7-17 before the Brewers staged a late comeback and cut the lead to 14-20 following a kill from freshman Molly Delahunty (Newton, MA). The Brewers got the set within three on an ace from freshman Melia Voss (Marietta, GA) but the Saints took the opening set on a kill from Vivian Zymeck.

Vassar rolled out to an 8-1 lead early in the second set as two aces and a kill from Delahunty along with a kill from Anthony-Brumfield. The Saints cut the advantage to 11-8 before Anthony-Brumfield slowed the run with a kill. St. Lawrence tallied the next five points to take its first lead of the set. Following back to back Anthony-Brumfield kills that gave the Brewers an 18-17 advantage, the Saints scored eight of the next nine points to take a 2-0 set lead.

Following a back and forth beginning to the third set, St. Lawrence took a 8-13 lead following an ace from Julia Giroux. Vassar responded and took its own lead at 14-13 on a winner from Hayes. St. Lawrence took the lead back at 22-21 but the Brewers rallied and took the third set following another Anthony-Brumfield winner and pushed the match to a fourth set.

Vassar raced out to an early 9-3 lead in the fourth set as Anthony-Brumfield tallied two more kills during the run. Following a Brewers error that trimmed its lead to 11-7, Vassar scored the next ten points, keyed by Delahunty's three kills. From there, the Brewers coasted to a 25-11 win in the fourth set as Anthony-Brumfield's kill was the winner of the set once again.

Following an early 3-3 tie of the final set, Hayes and Anthony-Brumfield combined for three kills and gave Vassar a 6-3 advantage. After a kill from Giroux that tied the set up at nine, the Brewers tallied the final six points of the match including two aces from Voss and kills from Hayes, Delahunty and sophomore Julia Hale (Hillsborough, CA).

Anthony-Brumfield finished with 18 winners on the day and added four digs. Hayes buried 16 kills in the contest while Delahunty added eight kills, three blocks and four aces. Voss handed out a career-high 41 assists and picked up a team-high five service aces. Levine finished the contest with 33 digs while freshman Noa McCrane (Los Angeles, CA) added 10 digs.

Lainey Roman tallied 14 kills for the Saints as she also lifted 14 digs and had two service aces. Giroux finished with 12 kills, 15 digs, three aces and two blocks. Lily Snide handed out 26 assists while Maggie Layman lifted 16 digs.

Vassar got an early 4-2 advantage off two kills from Hayes and one from Delahunty along with an ace from Levine. After Anthony-Brumfield moved the Brewers lead to 9-7, the Cougars tallied eight straight points, capped by a kill from Anne Beckemeyer. Vassar cut the lead back to one after two aces from Voss but Kean rattled off the final five points of the match to take the first set.

The second set began back and forth as a kill from Delahunty kept the Cougars lead to two points at 9-11. Kean then pushed its lead out to 11-18 after two kills from Aubre Adams. The Brewers scored three straight to cut the deficit to four but Kean earned the second set win following a winner from Ashley Smith.

The Brewers and the Cougars were knotted up at 12 apiece after a Delahunty ace but Kean scored the next six points to gain a 12-18 lead. Two late kills from Delahunty cut the deficit to three at 21-24 but a kill from Bella Stem gave Kean a 3-0 match victory.

Hayes finished with a team-high nine kills while Delahunty added eight winners and two blocks. Voss handed out 23 assists and had two more service aces with Levine lifting 12 digs for the Brewers. 

Three players had eight kills for Kean to lead the team as Smith added two aces and a block. Sian Seegar had a match-high three aces and 15 digs while Kylie Brua handed out a game-high 27 assists.

Vassar takes the court next Friday night as the Brewers head north for a Liberty League tilt with Ithaca. First serve with the Bombers is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
