POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Powered by a second half onslaught of goals, the Vassar College women's soccer team posted a 6-1 win over St. Lawrence University in Liberty League action on Saturday afternoon. The Brewers move to 7-4-3 overall and 3-2-1 in league play. The Saints slip to 6-4-2 and 2-3-1 in the Liberty League.
The Brewers jumped out to the 1-0 advantage early as junior forward
Claire Karlin scored in the ninth minutes. Senior captain and midfielder
Violet Munnelly earned the assist on the play, dribbling up the right side toward goal. Navigating into the box, she sent a perfect cross through the goal mouth as Karlin waited on the left side to bury it.
Both teams played tight through the remainder of the opening half, but the Brewers found the scoreboard quickly to kick off the final 45 minutes of play. In the 48th minute, Munnelly made it a 2-0 game after she collected the ball from a Saints defender from 20-yards out. Dribbling hard into the zone, she made her way into the box and drove a quick shot in past SLU keeper Keely Snode.
Munnelly made it a 3-0 edge in the 54th minute as junior midfielder
Justine Tapert dropped a quick pass to the senior captain. Munnelly took two strides before firing an off-angle shot on goal that banked high into the right corner.
Karlin found the scoreboard once again less than a minute later for her second of the game. Set up toward the midfield, Tapert headed the ball forward as Karlin caught up to it, dribbled down the middle and drilled the ball into the left corner past a diving Snode.
The Saints battled back in the 76th minute as Lily Pleau dropped in a well-placed ball on a free kick into the left of the box. Sam Cohen was there to head it into the goal past Vassar's
Teresa Zimmer to cut it to 4-1.
Vassar answered though as rookie midfielder
Ashley Butler chipped a shot forward toward the box. On the run, sophomore forward
Madison Bouggess caught up to it, taking a shot from the left side the caromed into the right corner past the keeper.
Butler then made it a 6-1 advantage, closing out the scoring as she sent a high-arching shot on net as it fell into the high left corner. She had gotten the ball following a well-placed corner kick from rookie midfielder
Becca Rodriguez.
