POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Saturday's action saw a battle of the last two undefeated teams in Liberty League play with St. Lawrence University coming out the victor with a 99-81 win over Vassar. With the victory, the Saints move to 10-0 and are now 4-0 in league play. The Brewers – who honored the Class of 2022 in a pre-game ceremony - slip to 5-6 and move to 4-1 with their first league defeat.
Leading the Saints was junior Olivia Barringer, who dropped in 19. She completed the double-double with 12 rebounds, adding two assists and a block. Senior Katie Frederick posted 18 points with a game-high 15 rebounds and three blocks, while classmate Dylan Watkiss recorded 18 points as well. Senior Ava McCann added 17 points, while junior Sierra Sanson rounded out the top five double-figure scorers for the visitors with 12 points.
For Vassar, senior captain
Sarah Gillooly poured in a career-and game-high 24 points, adding four boards, two assists and two steals. Junior
Eliza Srinivasan had 17 points with four assists and a game-best three steals, while rookie
Julia Harvey also posted 17 points. Senior captain
Dani Douglas dropped in 14 points for the game, adding a team-best six rebounds with a steal.
It was a tight game throughout as the Saints held just a four-point advantage after the opening two quarters. A Barringer layup at 8:56 of the third quarter helped push the Saints to a six-point edge (47-43), but the Brewers responded as Gillooly dropped in a pair of free throws, followed by layups from Douglas and Srinivasan to tie the game at 49-49 with 6:59 to go in the frame.
St. Lawrence went on a 11-0 run at that point, opening a 60-51 edge before layups from Harvey, Gillooly and rookie
Tash Thompson cut the margin to five (62-57) with 2:46 remaining. Despite the momentum, the Brewers couldn't hold off the Saints as they went on a 4-1 run to end the third quarter with a 66-58 lead.
Fourth quarter action opened with a layup from rookie
Tova Gelb, but a Frederick layup, coupled with a McCann three gave the visitors a 71-61 advantage. Watkiss followed that up with a three of her own, which was countered by Srinivasan to drop the lead back to eight (74-66) with 8:24 to go. The Saints continued to make timely buckets and despite three shots from beyond the arc, including two from Srinivasan, the Brewers could not close the gap further.
Vassar returns to the court on Tuesday when it travels to Union for a 5:30pm league tilt. The Saints are back in action next Friday, hosting Ithaca at 5:30pm.
