Second Half Comeback Paces Women's Hoops Past Union

Brewers turned on the heat late enroute to 61-47 win over Dutchwomen

SCHENECTADY, NY – Powered by strong second half effort, the Vassar College women's basketball team posted a 61-47 come-from-behind win against Union College in Liberty League action on Tuesday evening. The win moves the Brewers to 6-6 overall with a 5-1 mark in league play. The Dutchwomen are now 3-7 overall with a 1-3 mark in the Liberty League.

Vassar, which trailed by a 24-23 margin after the opening half of action, turned things around in the third frame as senior captain Dani Douglas drained back-to-back three's to turn a 33-29 Union lead into a 35-33 advantage for the Brewers. A layup and a free throw make from senior captain Sarah Gillooly, coupled with another Douglas trey and two free throws late in the frame sent VC into the fourth quarter with a 43-33 edge.

The Brewers continued to fire on all cylinders into the final stanza as rookie Julia Harvey got things going with another three-pointer less than 20 seconds in. Union senior Darby Leid drained a three of her own to cut the deficit to 48-36, but another three from Harvey seconds later saw the visiting Brewers pull out to a 51-36 margin at 8:33.

Another trey from Harvey at the 6:56 mark opened the gap to 54-36 and the shooting clinic continued as Vassar kept draining shots from in the paint and beyond the arc. The Brewers closed out their scoring at the 2:46 mark of the frame as Douglas drained her fifth three of the contest.

Douglas led all players in scoring for the contest, finishing with 21 points after going 7-of-14 from the floor and 5-of-10 from three-point range. She was also 2-of-2 at the free throw line with four boards and a steal.

Additionally, Harvey dropped in 18 points on 6-of-14 shooting from the floor, while also posting five trey's for the contest (5-of-11) and adding three rebounds, three assists and three steals. Gillooly was the final Brewer in double-figures, posting 13 points, including a 5-of-6 effort from the free throw line, while junior captain Eliza Srinivasan had a team-best 10 boards.

Union was paced by Leid's 11 points as she also dropped in four boards with an assist and a steal. Senior Laura Vinton dropped in seven points with a game-high 11 rebounds, adding two assists, while junior Olivia Pachla had a game-best three blocks.

Vassar, which completed the regular season sweep of the Dutchwomen (following a 60-54 win on December 7), is back in action on Friday when it travels to Skidmore. Union is also in action Friday, heading to RIT. Both games are set for 5:30pm start times.
