Brewers Comeback to Defeat Knights In Home Opener

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – After trailing 0-1 to Mount Saint Mary after an early penalty kick goal, the Vassar men's soccer scored two unanswered goals to earn their first win of the season Saturday afternoon at Gordon Field. With the win, the Brewers move to 1-1, while the Knights drop their season opener and go to 0-1.

Vassar made the first shot early on when senior Quinn Tunnell (Hershey, PA) took a header that sailed right past the Knights' goal. A Brewers handball in the penalty area led to a Mount Saint Mary penalty kick attempt. Matthew Wyant lined up for the shot and connected for the opening goal at 8:46.

Now down one, the Vassar offense picked up. Senior Eamon Geraghty (Oneonta, NY) took a free-kick just outside 10-yards out from the goal that was blocked, but junior Kyle Lopes (El Dorado Hills, CA) collected the rebound and fired the shot on goal. Knights' goalkeeper Zach Decker made the stop, though.

The Knights nearly scored again at the 29th minute, but Eric Wnorowski tallied the save. On the Vassar counter-attack, the Brewers crossed the ball in front of the Mount Saint Mary net. A little luck came Vassar's way, as the Knights' defense mishandled the ball on the clear and allowed an own goal to tie the game 1-1 at 31:03.

The Brewers' defense held firm in the second half and did not allow a single Mount Saint Mary's shot. Sophomore Teddy Borgos (Queensbury, NY) drove hard to the Knights' goal and took a quick shot, but Decker deflected the ball away.

Mount Saint Mary received a red card at the 75th, which opened up the field for the Brewers' offense. Less than 30 seconds later, first-year Derek Sando (Rockwall, TX) took a corner attempt from the right side of the field. Sando kicked the ball perfectly to fellow first-year Duncan Keker (Oakland, CA) five yards out in front of the goal. Keker headed the ball straight into the top right corner to put Vassar ahead 2-1 at 76:00 for the eventual game-winner.

Vassar outshot Mount Saint Mary 14-3 and held the 4-1 edge in corner kicks. Wnorowski made one save, while the Knights' Decker recorded four.

The Brewers next travel to SUNY Cobleskill on Sept. 8 for a 4 p.m. contest.
