COBLESKILL, N.Y. – The Vassar men's soccer team built to a 3-0 first-half lead to hold off SUNY Cobleskill for the eventual 4-1 victory on Wednesday afternoon. Four different Brewers scored as Vassar moves to 2-1 overall, while the Fighting Tigers dropped their season opener and fell to 0-1.
Vassar got on the board quickly and early, scoring two goals within the first 18 minutes of play. Junior Kyle Lopes (El Dorado Hills, CA) netting his first goal of the season at 3:05 to give the Brewers a 1-0 lead. Then at the 17th minute, senior Austin Lukasik (Jupiter, FL) connected with fellow senior Nathan Logan (San Francisco, CA) for the second score of the day.
The Brewers snuck in one more goal before halftime. First-year Duncan Keker (Oakland, CA) passed off to sophomore Teddy Borgos (Queensbury, NY), who took his one shot of the game and found the back of the Fighting Tigers' net for his first-career goal.Â
Keker pushed the Vassar lead to 4-0 in the second half, scoring after a pass from junior Kinlay Watkins (Berkeley, CA). SUNY Cobleskill managed to prevent the shutout, though, with Tanner Reisman scoring off a feed from Ethan Klein to end the game 4-1.
Vassar controlled most of the tempo by outshooting SUNY Cobleskill 22-2 and holding a 7-1 corner kick advantage. The Brewers had chances to run the score higher, but Fighting Tigers' goalkeeper John Gergen managed seven saves.
The Brewers play their next two games at home, starting with Stevens on Sept. 11 at 3 p.m. at Gordon Field.
