POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – An early first-half goal from senior Quinn Tunnell (Hershey, PA) proved to be the eventual game-winner as the Vassar men's soccer team downed Bard 1-0 on Wednesday afternoon on Gordon Field. The Brewers (7-2, 1-1 Liberty) earn their first Liberty League win of the season, while the Raptors (4-4, 0-2 Liberty) drop two straight.
Bard opened up play physically and went on to show that this would not be an easy game for Vassar. Four Raptors fouls in the opening ten minutes allowed the Brewers to maintain possession. Bard goalkeeper Gavin Hersey collected an early shot by Garrett Lusk (Arlington, VA).
Five minutes later, junior Nolan Alexander (New York, NY) lined up a corner attempt from the right side. The ball crossed to senior Andrew Goldsmith (Princeton, NJ) inside the box's top left. Goldsmith passed to Lusk in the middle, who headed the ball to Eamon Geraghty (Oneonta, NY). He gave back to Tunnell, who immediately shot. The ball hit the crossbar, but the kind bounce slipped past the line for the score.
Following the goal, Vassar went on to take seven shots in the final 15 minutes of the first half. Bard's Nic Soucy launched one ball at the Vassar goal, but Eric Wnorowski (Mantoloking, NJ) was there to clean it up.
Bard controlled the ball at the beginning of the second half, with most of the action being in the Vassar zone. Even with that, the Brewers only allowed two shots. Vassar had a few more chances to score but retook possession to wind the clock down.
Vassar outshot Bard 18-5 and held a 10-1 corner kick advantage. Wnorowski finished with two saves in the shutout, while Hersey made six.
The Brewers are back on the road for their nest Liberty League contest and play at Union on Sat. Oct. 2 at noon.
