SCHENECTADY, NY – The Vassar men's soccer team used two first-half goals to power its way past Union on Saturday afternoon. The Brewers (8-2, 2-1 Liberty) tally their second Liberty League win, while the Dutchmen (4-5-1, 0-3-0 Liberty) remain winless in the conference.
Union went on the offense first, firing a quick shot on goal within the first two minutes of play. Dutchmen's Chris Muther attempted, but goalkeeper Eric Wnorowski (Mantoloking, NY) collected the save. Vassar went on a quick counter-attack, and Duncan Keker (Oakland, CA) passed off to Quinn Tunnell (Hersey, PA), who scored the opening goal at 2:15.
Vassar maintained the pressure and scored again ten minutes later. The Brewers drew a corner attempt and crossed the ball perfectly to Tunnell at the top left inside the box. Tunnell shot immediately, but Union's goalkeeper made the stop. Ryan Lane (Santa Monica, CA) collected the rebound and launched it right back for the score.
The second half became more of a defensive battle, with neither side getting off many clean shots. Senior Nathan Logan (San Francisco, CA) nearly scored at the 28th minute, striking the crossbar. Teddy Borgos (Queensbury, NY) and Lane followed up with a shot right after but went high and wide. Late in the game, Lane made another attempt that the goalie wrapped up.
Despite the score, the team played similarly in statistics. The Dutchmen held a slight 10-9 shot advantage, and corners were tied 5-5.
Vassar next plays Skidmore at Gordon Field on Sat. Oct. 9 at 2 p.m.
