POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Vassar men's soccer team wrapped up non-conference play in good form, defeating Manhattanville 1-0 on Wednesday afternoon on Gordon Field. Sophomore Teddy Borgos (Queensbury, NY) netted the game-winner at the 66th minute for his third goal of the season. With the win, Vassar has now won six straight to move to 6-1, while Manhattanville falls to 1-4-1.
The Valiants played physically early, picking up five fouls within the first 21 minutes of play, but the Brewers took advantage with two shots at the opposing goal. Ryan Lane (Santa Monica, CA) had his shot turned away by goalkeeper Luis Granados, and then the goalie deflected a Nathan Logan (San Francisco, CA) attempt. The Vassar defense shut down any attacks by Manhattanville and did not allow any easy shots. A late try by the Valiants' Kendall Davis slipped through the defense, but goalkeeper Eric Wnorowski (Mantoloking, NJ) picked up the save. Borgos had one final shot before halftime, but the goalkeeper collected the ball.
The Brewers' defense held the Valiants to three shots and no shots on goal in the second half. When Austin Lukasik (Jupiter, FL) passed from the midfield to Lane, who was just outside the box, Vassar finally got on the board. Lane immediately slipped the ball past the defender to Borgos, who chipped the shot into the left corner of the net. Vassar continued to control the ball afterward to hang on for the win.
Wnorowski (6-1) made one save and records his fourth shutout of the season. Manhattanville's Granados made five stops in the loss.
Vassar now begins Liberty League play at RIT on Sat. Sept. 25 at 1 p.m.
