POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Senior Andrew Goldsmith (Princeton, NJ) scored a penalty kick goal at the 86th minute to give the Vassar men's soccer team a 1-0 win over visiting New Paltz on Wednesday afternoon. The Brewers have now won four straight and move to 4-1 overall, while the Hawks slip to 4-2.

Vassar controlled the game early in the first half and kept the ball in the Hawks' zone. Vassar could not break through the New Paltz defense despite two shot attempts from Ryan Lane (Santa Monica, CA) and another by Nathan Logan (San Francisco, CA). A Brewers' foul set up a Hawks' attack at the 23rd minute, and momentum began to swing. Goalkeeper Eric Wnorowski (Mantoloking, NJ) stopped a shot from Brandon Davenport but could not hold on to the ball. Philip Varner collected the rebound and kicked a kick attempt, but Wnorowski was there again for the save.

Late in the half, New Paltz struck the post and then had two more shots on goal. Wnorowski maintained composure and tallied two more saves. The Brewers' offense continued to struggle until Teddy Borgos (Queensbury, NY) made the first Vassar shot on goal, but the goalkeeper deflected it.

Shots were tied 5-5 in the first half, but the Vassar defense buckled down to allow just one New Paltz shot in the second. A Ryan Lopes (El Dorado Hills, CA) header nearly got the Brewers on the board, but it was once again turned away by the goalie. With under four minutes to play, Vassar drew a foul in the New Paltz penalty area. Goldsmith took the shot and fired in the left corner to put the Brewers ahead 1-0.

With the time winding down, the Hawks tried to come back with one late corner attempt, but the Brewers cleared the ball to secure the win.

Wnorowski records his second-straight shutout and adds four saves. New Paltz's Marc DePasquale recorded three saves.

Vassar has a one-game road trip next by traveling to face Plattsburgh State on Sat. Sept. 18 at 2 p.m.
