Box Score POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – Under beautiful skies on Saturday, the Vassar College women's tennis team kicked-off its 2021-22 campaign with the 2021 Vassar Scramble. At this year's event, which featured two rounds of singles and a round of doubles on the opening day, are also New York University and SUNY New Paltz.
For Vassar, round one singles action saw a number of solid efforts. Sophomore
Sofie Shen posted a 6-1, 6-0 victory over New Paltz's Onalee Batcheller. Brewers rookie
Macey Dowd took on New Paltz's Isabel Van Der Veen, notching a 6-1, 6-1 win, while classmate
Elyse Duley was victorious by a 6-2, 6-2 margin against NYU's Julia Siegler.
Senior
Melina Stavropoulos shouldered a tough 6-1, 6-0 loss to NYU's Dakota Fordham, while classmate
Nicole Pihlstrom was a 6-3, 6-2 winner over New Paltz's Heavenly White. VC rookie
Aria Wang posted a 6-3, 6-0 win against New Paltz's Loretta Donovan, while senior
Cara Kizilbash suffered a tough 6-0, 6-3 loss to NYU's Anastasiia Balyk.
In round two of singles, Dowd was once again victorious, besting NYU's Pearl Ngyuen, 6-2, 6-2. Stavropoulos bounced back with a solid 6-2, 6-4 win against New Paltz's Anya Barteck, while Shen squared off against NYU's Karina Jensrud, suffering a 4-6, 6-3, 10-6 loss.
Wang faced NYU's Claire Huang, notching a 6-0, 6-1 win, while Kizilbash was a 6-4, 6-0 winner against NYU's Phoebe Su. Pihlstrom squared off against New Paltz's Isabella Del La Roche, falling 6-4, 6-2, while Duley was a 6-1, 6-1 winner against New Paltz's Donovan.
In doubles action, Vassar's Shen and Kizilbash combined against NYU's Carol Plakk and Fordham, suffering an 8-2 loss. Stavropoulos and Dowd paired off against NYU's Jensrud and Balyk, claiming an 8-5 victory, while Wang and Duley bested New Paltz's Batcheller and Dratch by an 8-3 score.
