Johns' 13 Stops Helps Women's Lax Past Clarkson, 15-10

Rookie records 11 second half saves in Brewers second straight win

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Rookie goalie Lauren Johns had a 13 save performance to help lift Vassar College to a 15-10 victory over Clarkson University in Liberty League women's lacrosse action on Tuesday afternoon. The win – which marks the second in a row for the Brewers – moves them to 2-1 (2-1 LL), while the visiting Golden Knights are now 1-3 (1-3 LL).

It was a quick start to the contest for the visiting Golden Knights, who jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first two minutes of the game. Following a goal by freshman midfielder Madelynn Barnum at 28:53, Julia Nicotra connected off a feed from graduate student middie Katie Sargent for the two-tally advantage.

A score by sophomore attack Kateri Sanseviro helped cut Vassar's deficit, but another Clarkson score 22:58 by junior midfielder Grace Hagberg on the free position made it a 3-1 edge. The lead, however, was short lived as the Brewers went on a 5-1 run to turn it into a 7-4 favor.

Leading the charge was senior attack Alessandra Fable, who got things going at 22:11 off a feed from Sanseviro to make it 3-2. A shot off the stick of sophomore defender Trina Chou tied things up and another Fable tally at 17:53 pushed Vassar ahead, 4-3.

The Brewers made it a 5-3 edge off a tally by junior midfielder Ashley Roberts, but Barnum capitalized for the Golden Knights with a solid free position shot to pull the lead to one (5-4) at 15:52. VC countered seconds later as Fable connected for her third of the game, followed second later by rookie attack Natalie Daigle's first at 15:21.

Junior midfielder Caeli Porette, who assisted on the two previous goals from Fable and Daigle, added a score of their own with 11:44 to play to push Vassar out to a four-goal (8-4) advantage in the first half.
Fable, who scored seven goals in last Saturday's win over Union, added her fourth of the contest at the 6:34 mark, connecting off a pass from Roberts for the 9-4 advantage. Clarkson saw Hagberg pull the Vassar lead back to four (9-5) with her second of the game with 4:01 remaining.

Owning a 9-5 lead at half, Vassar saw its advantage shrink in the opening minute as Clarkson junior attack Sydney Roderick netted back-to-back goals to cut the lead to two. The Brewers struck back at the 22:27 mark with the first of four straight goals to regain a six-goal margin. Sophomore midfielder Maddy Kretten netted the first on the free position, followed less than two minutes later by a Porette score – also on the free position.

Holding the 11-7 lead, the Brewers once again saw Kretten tally with 20:17 to play, while Roberts notched a goal at the mid-point of the half for a 13-7 score. The Golden Knights saw freshman attack Hailey Millington net a free position tally with 13:29 on the clock and then later add another score off a feed from senior attacker Kyrsten Stone for a 13-9 Vassar lead at 9:42.

With 5:28 left on the clock, the Brewers added to their advantage once more as Fable sent a perfect pass to Porette, who cut the middle and fired in for the 14-9 margin. Another free position tally – Vassar's third of the game – widened the score further as Sanseviro buried a shot from the right side, but the Golden Knights continued to press as Sergeant took it to the other end for a high-arching shot over the reach of the Brewers' keeper to make it 15-10 with 3:01 to play.

Vassar regained control over the final minutes and held strong in the offensive zone to close out the victory.

Johns was outstanding for the Brewers, recording 11 of her stops in the second half of action. In addition to her solid play, Vassar also saw Fable notch four goals, adding five draw controls. Porette posted three goals with three assists, adding a game-best eight draws with a caused turnover and two ground balls. Sanseviro added two goals with two helpers, while Roberts notched two goals and an assist. Eight different players also recorded a caused turnover.

For Clarkson, Roderick, Hagberg and Millington all posted two goals. Sergeant added a goal with an assist. Barnum posted a game-best two caused turnovers, while freshman midfielder Rylee Ganter recorded a game-high five ground balls. In goal for the Knights, senior Emily Fischer had nine saves – four of which came in the opening half.

Vassar – which held a 33-28 advantage in shots for the contest - is now idle until April 16 when it travels to Saratoga Springs, NY for a 4pm contest at Skidmore. Clarkson returns to action on Friday, traveling to William Smith for a 4pm showdown with the Herons.
