Fable & Porette Power Women's Lacrosse to First Win of 2021

Duo combined for 13 goals and three helpers in VC's 17-14 win over Dutchwomen

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Senior attack Alessandra Fable scored a match-high seven goals to lead the Vassar College women's lacrosse team to a 17-14 victory over Union College on Saturday afternoon. With the victory, the Brewers earn their first win of the season and are now 1-1 overall and in league play. The Dutchwomen are now 2-2 on the season.

It was a wild first half of action which saw the two teams combine for a total of 21 goals. The visitors kicked things off less than a minute into the contest as senior midfielder Lindsay Gerrato netted one unassisted at 29:12. That set off a flurry for the Brewers as Fable connected on three straight to give the home team a 3-1 lead.

Her first came at 27:48 off a beautiful feed from junior midfielder Caeli Porette. Forty-one seconds later saw Fable's second off a pass from rookie attack Natalie Daigle. Following the third Fable goal, Union's Gerrato pulled it to within one at 20:41, while junior attack Grace Heiting made things interesting with the game-tying goal (3-3) less than 30 seconds later.

Fable netted a fourth tally at 19:18 for the go-ahead, this time converting a feed from sophomore middie Maddy Kretten. Porette then pushed the Brewers advantage to two (5-3) a minute later. Sophomore attack Sydney McPartlon scored the next two goals for Union, but sandwiched between the Dutchwomen tallies were goals from junior midfielder Ashley Roberts and Fable to make it a 7-5 game with 14:45 in the opening half.

Vassar continued to gain momentum with Porette notching back-to-back scores, but Union held tough as sophomore midfielder Dana Truini made it 9-6 at 11:38. Fable netted another score off a feed from Porette, who went on to score the next tally for an 11-6 advantage with 6:33 to play.

Union saw Trunini and McPartlon both tally near the end of the half, but Vassar continued to add as Fable netted her seventh of the contest for a 12-9 Brewers lead at half.

Second half action opened with a back and forth flurry as Roberts scored for the Brewers, followed quickly by a Gerrato score to close the gap to 13-10. Two more tallies from Porette pushed VC to a 15-11 advantage, but senior midfielder Isabel Bush had a pair of goals as well during the span to cut the deficit to 15-12.

Both teams continued to press in the offensive zone, but goals from sophomore attack Annie Uyeki and second-year defender Trina Chou sealed up the 17-14 margin of victory for Vassar.

Fable and Porette led the scoring charge for the Brewers with eight points each. Fable had seven goals and an assist with four draw controls, a caused turnover and a ground ball, while Porette posted six goals, two helpers, three draws and three ground balls. Roberts had two tallies, while Daigle posted two assists. Kretten paced the team with five draw controls.
