No. 4 Brewers Down No. 6 Cardinals in Match Two

ELMIRA, N.Y. - Andrew Kim knocked in a match-high 15 kills to lead the No. 4 Vassar men's volleyball team to a 3-1 victory over No. 6 St. John Fisher in the second match of the day. The Brewers now move to 6-2 overall and 5-2 in the United Volleyball Conference (UVC). Meanwhile, the Cardinals move to 7-5 overall and 5-3 in UVC play.

Vassar went ahead 9-5 after two straight kills from Kim and then an AJ Erickson service ace in the first set. St. John Fisher tied it 10-10 after Jake Baker blocked an attack from Gavin van Beveren. Then two back-and-forth service errors put the score at 11-11. Vassar took a two-point lead after Ryan Duchemin sent in a kill before Jake Kaplan recorded a solo block on a Matt Beiter attempt. The Brewers maintained a narrow lead, but eventually, the Cardinals tied it again at 18-18. Duchemin sent in a pair of kills to give Vassar a three-point advantage. St. John Fisher slipped on the set-point with a service error to provide Vassar with the win.

The Brewers struggled in the second, recording only five kills with ten errors. The Cardinals hit .364 percent to earn the 25-15 victory. After Jorge Adames Reyes slipped in a service ace, Vassar cut the lead to 5-6. St. John Fisher then used a 6-0 run to take an eight-point lead. Vassar could never quite recover, and another six unanswered from St. John Fisher was too much.

Vassar bounced back with another 25-22 win in the third. Things remained closed with both sides trading leads. An ace from Kim and a double block by Colin Jones and Vaughn Ramsey Vassar up 18-17. The Brewers closed out the set 3-0 behind three-straight kills by Kim.

The action was tight in the fourth, with the Brewers taking the set 25-21. St. John attempted to muster a comeback, but a late block from Duchemin and Kaplan put Vassar up 24-20. Kim once again sent in the match-winning kill.

Kim finished with 15 kills, while Jones had eight, and Ramsey recorded seven. Kim also had three service aces. Duchemin led the team with six blocks, and AJ Erickson dished out 34 assists. Matt Usui topped the group with 15 digs.
