Box Score POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Under mostly cloudy skies, the Vassar College women's tennis team powered past the chill to defeat Ithaca College in Liberty League action at Josselyn Courts on Saturday. The victory moves the Brewers to 2-0 on the season, while the Bombers are now 1-4.
Action got underway in doubles with the third team duo of juniors
Sara Ehnstrom and
Nicole Pihlstrom, who posted an 8-3 victory over junior Shannon Wolfe and rookie Audry Johnson. The Brewers went up 2-0 shortly after as junior
Cara Kizilbash and first year
Sofie Shen combined for a solid 8-3 win against senior Sara Steinberg and sophomore Caroline Herz.
Vassar gained the 3-0 advantage following the First Doubles win by junior
Melina Stavropoulos and sophomore
Tatum Blalock, who bested sophomores Rebecca Andrews and Zoe Davis for the strong edge heading into singles.
The Brewers took a 4-0 lead to open singles as Kizilbash defeated Herz in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0 from four. Shen secured the match victory at three as she posted a 6-1, 6-1 win over Steinberg.
Next off court was Blalock, who notched a 6-2, 6-1 win against Andrews from the first position, while Stavropoulos gutted out a 6-0, 7-5 win against Davis from two for the 7-0 margin.
Ehnstrom picked up the Brewers eighth point of the match, defeating junior Rel Klein in a hard fought 6-2, 7-6 decision. Rounding out the action was Pihlstrom at six as she recorded a 7-5, 6-3 win over Johnson.
Vassar is back in action next Saturday when they travel to Schenectady for an 11am match against the Dutchwomen of Union College. The Brewers then close out their current home slate on Sunday, hosting the Dutchwomen on Josselyn Courts at 2pm. Ithaca is also in action next Saturday, hosting William Smith at 1pm, before traveling to the Herons for a 1pm match the next day.
