#39 Men's Tennis Powers Past Union in Season Opener

Brewers claim five singles wins to take a 6-3 win over the Dutchmen

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Under sunny skies, the Vassar College men's tennis team played its first game of the 2021 season, besting Union College by a 6-3 margin at Josselyn Courts on Saturday. The No. 39 Brewers are 1-0 on the young season, while the Dutchmen fall to 0-1.

The visitors came out firing as doubles action got underway. Vassar jumped out to the 1-0 margin as seniors David Gandham and Adam Krueger combined for an 8-4 win over Union's Aidan O'Brien and Thomas McGuire. The Dutchmen tied the match from third doubles as Max Egna and Cameron Klepper bested Vassar rookies Benjamin Almquist and Arun Guruswamy, 8-4. Union then saw David Bond and Nick Weitzman earn an 8-7 (7-4) victory against Vassar senior Nicolas Demaria and freshman Jay Wong from two to grab the 2-1 edge heading into singles.

Vassar powered back to tie things up at 2-all as Almquist defeated Egna, 6-1, 6-0 at three. The Dutchmen saw Bailey McAtee grab the 6-2, 6-1 win against Guruswamy at six, but the Brewers rolled from that point for victory. At one, Gandham posted a solid 6-2, 6-1 win against O'Brien to push the match score to 3-2. His victory was followed by Wong as he defeated McGuire, 6-2, 6-2 at two. Krueger was then the victor at the fourth flight, powering past Klepper by a 6-1, 6-3 margin.

Rounding out the action was junior Mihajlo Ivanovic, who earned a 6-2, 6-2 win against Weitzman to close out the match and the 6-3 win for the Brewers.

Vassar is back in action next Saturday when it heads to Ithaca College for an 11am match-up against the Bombers.
