POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – The Vassar College men's squash team had a busy Sunday at Kenyon Courts, squaring-off against three different opponents throughout the day. The Brewers opened with a 9-0 victory over Swarthmore College, but later fell to Georgetown University, 7-2. Vassar wrapped up the day with a tough 5-4 loss to Boston University.
With today's action, the Brewers move to 3-2 on the season. Yesterday's action saw VC post 6-3 victories over Fordham University and Northeastern University.
In the morning victory against Swarthmore, junior
Sameer Mustafa posted a 3-0 (11-6, 11-5, 12-10) win against Joe Radek from the top of the ladder. Senior
Henry Mitchell claimed a 3-0 (11-7, 11-5, 11-4) victory of his own, taking down Sannan Dhillon, while Vassar rookie
Patrick Looby notched a 3-1 (5-11, 11-4, 11-3, 11-4) win over Saumya Raj at three.
Four saw senior
Max Swan with a 3-0 (11-5, 11-3, 11-5) win, while classmate and captain
Alex Wisneski notched a 3-0 (11-8, 11-8, 11-5) victory over Paris Shan at five.
Vassar freshman
Jarid Haslinger posted a 3-0 (11-0, 11-1, 11-3) win against Zaid Ali at six, followed by a 3-0 (11-0, 11-1, 11-1) win by Brewers rookie
Azaan Malik at seven over Abraham Porschet. Senior captain
Reese Collins cruised to a 3-0 (11-0, 11-1, 11-0) victory against Owen Sears, while junior
Josh Finkelstein bested Devyani Mahajan at nine, 3-0 (11-6, 11-2, 11-0).
Against the Hoyas of Georgetown, the Brewers saw Looby notch a 3-1 (12-10, 11-7, 9-11, 11-7) win against Sam Hitt at four, while Collins was a 3-1 (11-13, 12-10, 11-8, 11-6) winner against Laird Fitzgerald at nine.
Despite the loss, Vassar saw a number of hard-fought efforts, including Malik at eight as he fell by a 3-2 (11-5, 11-9, 5-11, 8-11, 11-8) margin to William Conzelman.
In the final match of the day against the Terriers, the Brewers found themselves down 3-0 after opening losses at the third, fourth and fifth spots on the ladder. Mustafa helped the Brewers back in, taking a 3-0 (11-5, 12-10, 11-7) victory against Christian Bae at two, while Collins posted a 3-0 (11-3, 11-0, 11-5) win over Shanmugesh Raja at nine.
Sophomore
Rithik Jalali notched a 3-0 (11-8, 11-7, 11-3) win over Hunter Chun at the top of the ladder, while Malik tied the match at 4-all with a 3-0 (11-3, 11-7, 11-3) score against Jason Gao at eight.
The match came down to the six spot as Wisneski squared-off against DJ Reed. Despite a hard-fought effort, Wisneski was not able to pick up the win, shouldering a 3-0 (11-9, 11-6, 11-9) loss.
Vassar is back in action next Saturday when it travels to Bard for the Raptors Round Robin. The Brewers will face Colgate (11am) and Lafayette (12:30pm).
