GENEVA N.Y. – The Vassar men's soccer team recorded its third straight clean sheet, but this time it came as a 0-0 draw with Hobart on Saturday afternoon. Despite the score, both sides had opportunities to score, with 29 total shots taken. The draw moves the Brewers to 10-2-2 and 4-1-2 in the Liberty League, which keeps Vassar tied for third in the conference standings. The Statesmen currently hold the sixth spot with an overall record of 7-6-2 and 3-3-2 in the conference.
From the start, Hobart put pressure on Vassar goalkeeper Eric Wnorowski (Mantoloking, NJ) by taking four shots on goal within the first 18 minutes. Amad Miller took a shot at 7:15 following a Statesmen corner, but Wnorowski made the stop. Then the Statesmen had three consecutive shots from August Martini and Miller that were all saved by the Brewers' goalkeeper.
Vassar responded with a shot from Austin Lukasik (Jupiter, FL) that hit the Hobart goalkeeper. Owen Fauth (Keene, NH) collected the rebound shot, but Gui Castaneda Chang saved it.
Afterward, the defenses took over for the remainder of the half with only one more shot taken.
While shots were tied 6-6 in the second half, Vassar could not find any clear looks on goal, with three blocked by Hobart defenders. Wnorowski continued to be strong in goal, making two more stops to keep the game scoreless.
Overtime proved to be more similar, with Hobart holding a 3-2 shot advantage in the two periods. Kyle Lopes (Santa Monica, CA) fired a shot late in the first overtime that the goalkeeper saved. Hobart took one more shot in the second overtime, but that proved to be the final one.
Vassar earns its ninth shutout of the season, while Wnorowski tallied seven saves. Chang had three saves.
