TROY, NY – The Vassar men's soccer team extended to a seven-game unbeaten streak after downing Liberty League leader RPI 2-1 on Wednesday evening at East Campus Stadium. After trailing 0-1 following an early first-half goal, the Brewers scored two unanswered to secure the victory. Vassar (11-2-2) is now tied for second in the conference standings with a 5-1-2 league mark. Even with the loss, RPI (10-4-2) is first at 6-2 in the conference.
The Engineers controlled nearly every statistical category and were the first to get on the board. RPI crossed the ball in front of the Vassar net, and an unfortunate clear by the Brewers' backline led to an own goal at the 13th minute. Despite that, Vassar rallied right away. Junior Ryan Lane (Santa Monica, CA) drove down from the midfield to the RPI zone. There he passed to Duncan Keker (Oakland, CA) on the left wing inside the box. Keker fired the shot on goal, and the goalkeeper made the stop, but the ball bounced out. Senior Quinn Tunnell (Hershey, PA) came in from the right and chipped the ball back into the net to tie it 1-1 at the 24th minute.
Vassar did not take a shot for the remainder of the half and then scored early in the second. From 15-yards out from the RPI net, junior Kinlay Watkins (Berkeley, CA) had a shot blocked by a defender. He collected his rebound and quickly dished off to Lane in the middle, who tipped the ball over the goalkeeper to make it 2-1.
When he was one-on-one with the goalie, Watkins almost pushed the score up, but Luke Brezek saved in the bottom left. The Engineers responded with three consecutive shots on the Vassar goal. Junior Eric Wnorowski (Mantoloking, NJ) was unfazed by the pressure, though, making stops on each. The Brewers continued to play the midfield game and let their defense shut down the Engineers for the remainder of the night.
Wnorowski finished the game with a career-high nine saves, while Brezek had three. RPI outshot Vassar 24-6 and was also up 8-0 in corner kicks.
Vassar wraps up the regular season on Sat. Oct. 30 against Ithaca at 2 p.m. on Gordon Field.  Â
