Vassar Draws 1-1 With Skidmore

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Both goals came early in the first half on the way to a 1-1 tie between Vassar and Skidmore on Saturday afternoon. With the draw, the Brewers move to 8-2-1 overall and 2-1-1 in the Liberty League. Meanwhile, the Thoroughbreds go to 6-4-1 with a 1-2-1 mark in the conference.

The Brewers scored on their first shot attempt in the 4th minute. Senior Austin Lukasik (Jupiter, FL) quickly passed inside to Quinn Tunnell (Hershey, PA), who kicked the ball toward the Skidmore net. The ball arched over the goalie and inside to put Vassar ahead 1-0.

Skidmore evened the score two minutes later when Roman Toepler broke up the Vassar clear attempt. He touched the ball to Finn Weber, who kneed the ball in from the right side.

Vassar was able to keep the pressure up in the first half, outshooting Skidmore 10-6. At the 41st minute, the Brewers got a penalty kick attempt. Senior Andrew Goldsmith (Princeton, NJ) lined up for the shot but struck the left post to keep the game tied.

The Brewers held the shot advantage again in the second half but were unable to score again. Skidmore nearly scored late in the half when Alec Llerena fired a point-blank shot. Luckily for the Brewers, junior Ryan Lane (Santa Monica, CA) ran back and made the slide to deflect the ball out of bounds.

Both sides looked worn out in overtime, with only one shot attempt in the first period and four in the next. The final Vassar shot came from Brandon Liu (Seattle, WA), but the Thoroughbreds goalkeeper collected it.

Goalkeeper Eric Wnorowski (Mantoloking, NJ) made three saves, while Skidmore's Bobby Stratts had six.

Vassar is home next for its senior day game against Clarkson on Fri. Oct. 15 at 4 p.m.
