SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Vassar field hockey head coach Michael Warari earned his 100th career win as the Brewers downed the Thoroughbreds 3-0 on Saturday afternoon. Three different Brewers scored as Vassar (8-2, 1-1 Liberty) picks up its first Liberty League win of the season. Skidmore now falls to 5-5 overall with a 1-1 mark in the conference.
Vassar controlled the game early, outshooting Skidmore 8-0 in the first quarter. The Brewers took six shots, with four being on goal in the first four minutes of play. The Thoroughbreds defense did not buckle, though, and goalie Jess Gaetgens made three saves.
Vassar finally broke through in the second quarter when Maggie Werner (Berkeley, CA) tipped the ball in following a Hailey Brigger (San Diego, CA) shot off a corner. The Brewers added another score less than 10 minutes later. Katie Hieb (Pewaukee, WI) inserted the corner to Brigger at the top of the circle for the dependable attempt. The ball sliced through the defense to make it 2-0.
It was scoreless in the third quarter, but the Thoroughbreds took their only three shots of the game then. Each one managed to be on-goal attempts, but goalkeeper Sarah Dumaresq (Barnstable, MA) formed a wall to stop all three.
The Brewers tacked on one more goal in the fourth. This time Ella Pearl (San Francisco, CA) chipped the shot in for her sixth goal of the season.
Vassar went on to outshoot Skidmore 12-3 and held a 15-3 penalty corner advantage. Dumaresq made three saves, while Gaetgens recorded six.
The Brewers are back home on Sat. Oct. 9 for a senior day game against St. Lawrence at 1 p.m.
