POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Vassar men's soccer team earned its eighth shutout of the season after defeating St. Lawrence 2-0 Saturday afternoon on Gordon Field. The Brewers scored the opening penalty kick goal and then tallied another score in the second half to secure the conference victory. Vassar is now 10-2-1 overall while holding a 4-1-1 mark in the Liberty League. The Saints fall to 7-5-1 and 3-3-1 in the conference.
St. Lawrence had a few early chances when Marvin Sibanda struck the post at the 12th minute, and then Antonio Rogliano fired back the rebound shot. Goalkeeper Eric Wnorowski (Mantoloking, NJ) wrapped up the ball to keep it scoreless. The Saints kept up the press on the Vassar offense, but eventually, the Brewers drew a foul in the penalty zone. Senior Eamon Geraghty (Oneonta, NY) took the penalty kick and chipped the shot for the opening score at 29:08.
The Saints responded with two late shot attempts by Max Mogul and Parker Hotchkiss, but Wnorowski could wrap up both.
Vassar tacked on another goal 16 minutes into the second half. First-year Duncan Keker (Oakland, CA) spun and passed the ball back to senior Quinn Tunnell in the middle just outside the Saints' box. Tunnell slipped the ball to junior Owen Fauth (Keene, NH) inside, making the quickstep and kicking into the left post. The ball had the kind bounce and went back in the net for the score.
Wnorowski recorded his second-straight clean sheet and made four saves, while the Saints' Ben Woelfinger also had four stops.
Vassar travels to face Hobart next on Sat. Oct. 23 at 3 p.m.
