Women's Soccer Bests Clarkson in League Road Action

Brewers record 2-0 win over the Golden Knights on Friday

POTSDAM, NY – Behind a pair of second half scores, the Vassar College women's soccer team posted a 2-0 victory at Clarkson University on Friday afternoon. The victory moves the Brewers to 7-4-1 overall with a 2-2-1 league mark, while the Golden Knights slip to 3-6-2 and 1-3-2 in the Liberty League.

After an opening half of action that saw Vassar hold a 4-3 edge in shots, the Brewers turned the tables even further with a hard-hitting 9-2 shot margin in the second half of action.

With the contest knotted and no score, the Brewers opened a flurry of action as sophomore middie Justine Tapert dropped a shot wide left, while junior midfielder Violet Munnelly posted a shot that was saved by Clarkson's Molly DiCaprio at 57:11.

A mere 31 second later saw Vassar take the 1-0 advantage as senior forward Skylar Herrera-Ross dropped in her fifth tally of the season off an outstanding feed from rookie defender Riley Lipman.

The Brewers continued to attack the Golden Knights goal as shots from sophomore defender Olivia Lavelle and junior forward Isabel Leinenweber were both saved by DiCaprio, in addition to wide shots from Herrera-Ross and sophomore back Cate Greene.

In the 70th minute it was rookie midfielder Noelle Namba that gave the visitors the two-goal advantage, scoring the first goal of her collegiate career off a pass from Lavelle.

The Brewers had several other attempts as time wound down, but it was the defense that prevailed as Vassar's unit held the Golden Knights to just five shots total and just one on goal for the game.

Leading that defensive charge was sophomore goalie Claire Mackenzie, who earned the victory with a one-save effort. For Clarkson, DiCaprio posted three stops.

Both teams return to action on Saturday as Vassar heads down the road for an 11am league tilt at St. Lawrence. Game time was originally set for 2pm but has been moved earlier due to impending bad weather.  Clarkson welcomes Bard – also at 11am.
