CANTON, NY – Powered by a pair of first half goals, which included an extended weather delay in between, the Vassar women's soccer team defeated St. Lawrence by a 2-0 margin in Liberty League action on Saturday. With the victory – which included a 2-0 win at Clarkson on Friday, the Brewers move to 8-4-1 overall with a 3-2-1 mark in league play. The Saints are now 5-5-2 with a 2-4-1 Liberty League record.
The Brewers opened the game's scoring in the 17th minute following the fourth tally of the season from sophomore midfielder Jaqueline Morrison. Senior forward
Skylar Herrera-Ross got the play going as she corralled the ball, and shot a pass toward the far side. Rookie midfielder
Noelle Namba, who recorded her first career goal in yesterday's win at Clarkson, sent a nice pass into the box.
Morrison was there, spun around a defender to take a quick shot past Saints keeper Keely Snode, who just missed on a diving attempt to deflect.
Following a long delay due to weather, the two teams returned to the field after over an hours wait. The Brewers wasted little time upon their return, notching their second of the contest in the 40th minute. Earning a free kick, junior forward
Violet Munnelly sent in a long ball into the box, separating from the defender, classmate
Isabel Leinenweber one-touched it for a shot right into the back of the net.
The Brewers had an outstanding chance to make it a 3-0 contest early in the second half as rookie forward
Emily Foote fired in a bullet shot on a free kick, but Snode was there to make the catch at the goal mouth.
The Saints put the pressure on in the late stages of the game, including a point-blank shot in the final seconds by first year defender Jenna Durkin, but the Brewers defense, backed by sophomore keeper
Claire Mackenzie held strong.
Mackenzie made three saves in the victory, moving their record to 3-0-0 on the season. Snode shouldered the loss for the Saints with six stops.
Vassar, which owned a 15-9 margin in shots for the contest, returns to the pitch next Saturday when it hosts William Smith on Gordon Field at 3pm. The game against the Herons will also mark Senior Day as the Brewers celebrate their three members of the Class of 2022. The Saints return to action on Wednesday in a 4pm tilt at SUNY Canton.
