CLAREMONT, CA - The Vassar College women's tennis team opened its California training trip on Sunday, battling against Division III's number one team, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS). The Brewers suffered a 7-2 loss to the Athenas and are now 2-3 on the season. CMS improves to 13-0 overall.
The Athenas opened with a 3-0 sweep in doubles action as Sydney Lee and Anna Kern combined at three for an 8-1 win against Vassar sophomore
Melina Stavropoulos and junior
Frances Cornwall. At one, Catherine Allen and Caroline Cox posted an 8-2 win against Brewers' senior
Tara Edwards and junior
Sarra Yekta.
Two saw a close battle as Devon Wolfe and Ana Bryan-Ajania defeated Vassar freshmen
Miriam Gandham and
Tatum Blalock by an 8-6 score.
In singles action, the Athenas improved to 4-0 in the match as Kern defeated Yekta at five, 6-2, 6-0. Three was off court next as Gabby Lee bested Edwards, 6-0, 6-2 for the match clinching win, while at one, Sarah Bahsoun posted a 6-2, 6-2 victory against Cornwall for the 6-0 score.
The Brewers battled back as Stavropoulos gutted out a 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-7) win against Georgia Tuckerman at six, followed by a win at two as Gandham edged past Madison Shea, 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (10-8). The match concluded at four as Nicole Tan posted a dramatic 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-4) tiebreaker win against Blalock.
Vassar is back on court on Monday as it faces Hardin-Simmons at 9am (Pacific Time). CMS will return to action on Wednesday for a single match against WashU, which will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.
