CLAREMONT, CA - A solid doubles sweep, combined with strong singles action propelled the Vassar College women's tennis team to a 7-2 win over Hardin-Simmons University on Monday in non-conference action in California. With the win, the Brewers move to 3-3 overall, while the Cowgirls are now 5-4.
Senior
Tara Edwards and junior
Sarra Yekta posted a tiebreaking win at one, defeating Kaitlyn Hathorn and Lauren Schaeffer, 8-7. At two, freshmen
Miriam Gandham - the reigning Liberty League Rookie of the Week - and
Tatum Blalock earned an 8-5 win over Landry Laywell and Priscilla Schimming, while three saw sophomores
Cara Kizilbash and
Melina Stavropoulos cruise to an 8-4 win over Abigail Kendall and Maddie Hammond.
"Sweeping the doubles was huge. The 3 court was in command of the match the entire time hitting penetrating groundies and put-away volleys," explained head coach
Kathy Campbell. "At one, we were down a break much of the match, but broke back to even the score at 7-7. We were up in the tiebreak throughout, playing gritty and clutch tennis on important points and got steadier under pressure. At two, Vassar was down 2-5 and won 6 games straight to take the match. We increased our consistency and put away more volleys."
Singles action saw four wins, paced at two by junior
Frances Cornwall, who bested Laywell by a 6-2, 6-2 score. From three, Blalock was victorious, 6-0, 6-4 over Hammond, while four saw Edwards earn a 6-3, 6-2 victory against Schaeffer.
The Brewers gained a strong win at six, paced by senior
Ashley Fair, who took on Kendall. Down 1-0 after a tough opening game, Fair battled back in the second and then claimed victory in the third for the hard-fought 6-7 (3-7), 6-2, 1-0 (10-5) win.
Rounding out the action with tough losses was Gandham at one, falling to Hathorn 6-2, 6-2 and Kizilbash, as she suffered a 6-4, 7-5 loss to Schimming.
"The Hardin-Simmons team was gritty and scrappy making tons of balls," Campbell continued. "Vassar needed to adapt to structure points. At two, Frances waited for opportunities to hit swinging volleys. Edwards hit precise passing shots. Blalock was super steady. Fair used variety keeping her opponent off balance with a tiebreak win. The Vassar team played determined tennis today."
Vassar (3-3) returns to action on Tuesday in a 3pm (Pacific Time) match at Caltech in Pasadena, California.
