Kelly Pushie scored on the free position with 1:27 left of the first three minutes of overtime, lifting Vassar College to a come-from-behind win against Skidmore College in Liberty League action on Wednesday evening. The Brewers are now 2-0 overall, while the Thoroughbreds slip to 0-3 on the young season.
Trailing by a 12-9 margin at the 18:14 mark of the second half, Vassar began to mount a comeback, beginning at the 10:06 mark as sophomore midfielder
Caeli Porette (Stony Point, NY) scored to cut the deficit to two (12-10).
Pushie (Mahwah, NJ) then connected at the 6:36 mark, closing the gap further to 12-11. The two teams continued back and forth until the 2:56 minute as Pushie once again score, this time on the free position to the contest at 12-all.
Skidmore senior attack Abby Sanford (Avon, CT) nearly connected for the Thoroughbreds in the final second of regulation, but Vassar keeper
Jackie Molloy (Buffalo Grove, IL) held strong to send the contest into overtime.
The visitors won the opening draw of the extra session, but an untimely turnover gave the ball back to the Brewers, who would not relinquish the possession. Junior attack
Alessandra Fable (Orlando, FL) fired in a shot that was saved by Skidmore goalie Caroline Kenlon (Manhasset, NY), but it was Pushie who converted on the free position to give Vassar the victory.
Vassar was paced by Pushie as she recorded a game-best four goals and three assists for seven points, going 2-for-2 on the free position. Porette posted two goals and an assist with a game-best six ground balls, four caused turnovers with one draw control. Fable added three goals and a game-high 14 shots with five draw controls, while senior midfielder
Tessa Waters (Skokie, IL) added a goal, a ground ball, a caused turnover and a game-high seven draw controls. In goal, Molloy finished with six stops for the win.
Skidmore was paced by freshman midfielder Katie Amorosino (Norwell, MA), who had three goals with a ground ball. Freshman attack Amelia Bassett (Hopkinton, MA) added two goals, while five others also added goals, including junior midfielder Emily Hirsch (Yorktown Heights, NY), who also had an assist and a team-best four draw controls. Kenlon finished with five ground balls, in addition to 13 saves in goal.
The Brewers finished with a 41-23 edge in shots, including a 26-18 advantage in shots on goal. Vassar was 23-27 on the clear, while the Thoroughbreds were 19-29. Vassar also held the edge in ground balls, 25-16, and draw controls, 14-13.
Vassar returns to action on Sunday when it faces Centre College in a match to be played at Sewanee: The University of the South, in Sewanee, Tennessee. That match is set for a 1pm start. Skidmore heads to Maryland on Monday when it played Stevenson University at the US Lacrosse Tierney Field in Sparks, Maryland at 7pm.
