Brewers battle back in singles action for the win over the Yellowjackets

ROCHESTER, NY - It was an outstanding day of action for the Vassar College men's tennis team as they defeated the University of Rochester by a 5-4 margin at the Goergen Athletic Center. The victory moves the Brewers to a 3-0 start on the season, while the 37th-ranked Yellowjackets are now 1-1 in dual meet action.

Doubles action got things going and the Yellowjackets struck first as sophomore Pasquale Procaccino (Alexandria, VA) and graduate student Matt Resnikoff (West Long Branch, NJ) combined for an 8-6 win over juniors David Gandham (Ann Arbor, MI) and Adam Krueger (Bay Village, OH) at two. The Brewers evened the score from three as sophomore Mathew Yee (Sha Tin, Hong Kong) and junior Nicolas Demaria (New Hyde Park, NY) bested junior Connor Wagner (Rochester, NY) and freshman Michael Rudin (Irvine, CA), 8-5.

Rochester took the 2-1 advantage after senior Yifan Shen (Taichung, Taiwan) and sophomore Charlie Fang (Beijing, China) earned an 8-5 win against seniors Jeremy Auh (Scottsdale, AZ) and Allen Sokolov (Woodland Hills, CA).

Singles action opened with a win by Krueger to tie the match at 2-2 as he defeated senior Tanmay Thakkar (Mumbai, India), 6-1, 6-4. From two, Fang pushed U of R ahead once again, defeating Yee, 6-2, 6-2, but the Brewers countered again with Gandham besting Shen at one, 6-3, 6-2.

Vassar gained the 4-3 edge after Sokolov won at four against freshman Kai Yuminaga (Oakland Gardens, NY) by a 6-2, 6-4 margin. Rochester tied things at 4-all next as Procaccino earned a 6-2, 6-0 win against Auh at five.

The match came down to six as VC sophomore Mihajlo Ivanovic (Belgrade, Serbia) and Resnikoff battled. The first set was won by Resnikoff by a 6-2 margin, but Ivanovic roared back, taking a 6-2 edge in the second set, followed by a 7-5 margin for the individual and team victory.

Vassar is right back in action next weekend, beginning Saturday when it welcomes Skidmore College in Liberty League action in the Walker Field House. Match time is set for 1pm.
