Box Score WEST POINT, NY - The Vassar College women's tennis team opened its spring campaign on Saturday, squaring off against Division I Army in West Point. The Brewers shouldered a 7-0 loss - using DI scoring - and are now 1-1 in dual meet action.
"I'm proud of the way we competed," said Brewers head coach,
Kathy Campbell. "We structured our points against against a very strong Army team and forced them to earn the point. We battled to the finish raising our games as the match progressed. Scores do not always reflect the quality of the matches."
Doubles action kicked things off in the first flight as Sasha Inchauste (Houston, TX) and junior Hannah Boubel (Fredericksburg, TX) battled against VC freshman
Miriam Gandham (Ann Arbor, MI) and junior captain
Sarra Yekta (Las Vegas, NV), earning a 6-2 win over the Brewers' duo.
Army earned the doubles point (needing to win two of three) from three as junior Bridget Mayfield (Kirkwood, MO) and junior Sophia Suri (Kennesaw, GA) posted a 6-2 win against senior
Ashley Fair (Laguna Beach, CA) and freshman
Jade Wilkinson (George Town, Grand Cayman).
Action in doubles concluded at two as Army seniors Gloria Son (Aurora, CO) and Danna Funaro (Fairfield, CT) bested junior
Frances Cornwall (Poway, CA) and senior captain
Tara Edwards (Littleton, CO) by a narrow 7-5 margin.
Singles action opened with Army's McKinnley Smith (Culpeper, VA) earning a 6-1, 6-1 decision against VC sophomore
Cara Kizilbash (Pensacola, FL). The first flight was next as Black Knights' sophomore Sam DiMaio (Winter Park, FL) posted a 6-1, 6-1 decision against Cornwall. From three, Inchauste recorded a 6-1, 6-1 win against Edwards, while the next point for Army came from four as junior Abi Waldman (Acworth, GA) notched a 6-0, 6-0 win against freshman
Tatum Blalock (Austin, TX).
Five saw Army freshman Anna Lourerio (Orland Park, IL) record a 6-3, 6-3 victory versus sophomore
Melina Stavropoulos (Atherton, GA), while the match concluded at two with sophomore MaryJo Pidgeon (Douglasville, GA) recording a 6-4, 6-1 win against Gandham.
"It was great to get back to match play after weeks of practice," added Campbell. "It's inspiring to see where we are and exciting to continue our work moving forward."
The Brewers will continue to build on their momentum on Saturday, Feburary 22nd with a full day of action in Massachusetts. Vassar will travel to Mount Holyoke College for an 11am match in South Hadley, Mass., followed by a 6pm neutral site match against ninth-ranked MIT at the Bay Road Club in Amherst, Mass.
