Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Brewers Fall In Road Trip At RPI

TROY, N.Y. – Two members of the Vassar men's basketball team scored in double figures, but it was not enough as the Brewers lost 49-61 to RPI on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Engineers have now won 18 straight and move to 18-2 overall and 13-0 in the Liberty League. Meanwhile, Vassar slips to 9-12 and 5-9 in the conference.

Junior Zach Bromfeld (Woodmere, NY) paced the Brewers across the board with 16 points and eight rebounds. Freshman Avni Mustafaj (Yonkers, NY) added ten points with two steals, while first-year Zach Johnson (San Francisco, CA) tacked on nine points and five rebounds off the bench. In total, the Brewers' bench outscored RPI's 18-11.

Vassar took a 33-22 first-half lead after falling behind early to the Engineers. After trailing 9-2, the Brewers used a 9-0 run to take a two-point lead. RPI retied the game 11-11, but junior Lance Tebay (Virginia Beach, VA) sank a triple to push the lead to 13-11. An 8-0 Vassar span followed until RPI's Patrick Mahoney broke the streak. Mustafaj answered right away with a trey to keep Vassar up 25-13 at 5:31. The Brewers held a double-digit lead for the remainder of the half, going up 13 points following a layup from freshman Joey Sacco (Ocean City, NJ). The Engineers scored the final possession before the break to cut the lead to 11.

Momentum did not carry over into the second half for the Brewers, with RPI opening on a 12-2 run to make it 35-34 with 14:28 left. After Johnson split a pair of free throws, RPI tied the game 36-36. The Engineers retook the lead at 9:13 following a three-pointer from Mitchel Wayland and slowly began pulling away. Vassar did not go away that easily, though, going on a quick 7-0 run that closed with another Mustafaj triple to take a one-point lead at 4:26.

RPI responded with three straight three-pointers to take the lead for the final time and led by as much as 14 to close the game.

Vassar looks to bounce back when they return home to face Union on Fri. Feb. 14 at 7:30 p.m. at the AFC.
