No. 5 Brewers Sweep Aside Gators

Vassar Moves to 2-0 in the UVC

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The No. 5 Vassar men's volleyball won their eighth match in a row on Friday evening. The Brewers defeated Sage 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-12) and now move to 8-2 overall and 2-0 in the UVC. Sage drops to 1-10 and 0-1 in the conference.

Vassar controlled the first set and never gave up the lead. Two straight service aces by senior Ghali Khalil (Alexandria, Eygpt) put the Brewers up 5-1. Sage chipped back in to make it 15-11, but sophomore Joe Hendrickson (Feeding Hills, MA) knocked in a kill and service ace to push the lead to 17-11. The Brewers increased the lead to seven after a 3-0 run. Freshman Andrew Kim (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA) knocked in the set-winning point following a Sage service error.

The Gators picked up the pace in the second, going on a 5-0 run to take an early 5-2 lead. Sage maintained the lead for most of the set, but a Ros kill and two consecutive aces by Jake Kaplan (Leesburg, VA) tied it 15-15. After a Vassar error, Sage went up 16-15. Three Gators' errors followed, and the Hendrickson tallied a kill to put the Brewers ahead 19-16. Sage was able to pull within one until Vassar closed out 4-2 for the victory.

Khalil made two kills to open the third, and then Ros and Hendrickson hit two scores in to make it 4-1. The Brewers used a 5-0 run that comprised of another Khalil ace and a kill from Kaplan to take a 19-7 advantage. Sophomore Andrew Halberg (Newark, DE) tallied a kill to spur a 3-0 run before Hendrickson hit in the game-winning kill.

Ros totaled 11 kills on 13 attacks (.769) with seven digs, while Hendrickson had 11 kills on 18 attacks (.556). Kim and Khalil each had seven kills, with Khalil leading the team with three aces. Kaplan and Kim both made two services aces. Sophomore Matt Usui (Rolling Hills Estates, CA) led Vassar with eight digs. Freshman Steven Koja (Temecula, CA) made 27 assists.

For the Gators, Shane Wenz made 11 kills on 23 attacks. Ryan Jennings had a team-high six digs and 13 assists.

Vassar continues action on Wed. Feb. 12, hosting No. 2 Springfield in Kenyon Hall at 6 p.m.
