Women's Basketball Advances to Liberty League Championship Game

Brewers post 79-49 victory over St. Lawrence in Semifinals

ITHACA, NY - For the fourth time in program history, the Vassar College women's basketball team will play for the Liberty League Championship title after defeating St. Lawrence University, 79-49 in Semifinal action on Saturday.

The second-seeded Brewers improve to 19-7 overall, while the third-seeded Saints finish with an 18-9 mark. Vassar will now face top-seeded Ithaca on Sunday in the Championship at 1pm. That match, like today's, will be played at Ben Light Gym on Ithaca's campus.

Vassar opened the game on a tear, posting a 26-10 margin in the opening frame behind points from seven different scorers, including eight points from senior guard Jackie Cenan (Laguna Beach, CA) and seven from classmate and center Sophie Nick (Denver, CO).

Second quarter action was tighter in the score, but the Brewers continued to hold a double-figure edge. A three-pointer from senior guard Isa Peczuh (Willington, CT) mid-way through the frame pushed the lead to 19 (31-12) at 5:30, followed quickly by a pair of free throw makes from Nick for a 21-point advantage with 3:56 on the clock.

An Olivia Barringer layup cut the deficit to 36-19 and free throws from Ava McCann helped make it a 16-point deficit for the Saints, but the Brewers kept pace to head into the locker room at the half up 17 (38-21).

Third quarter action saw SLU's Dylan Watkiss nail a trey early to cut the VC lead to 11 (38-27), but a 16-0 run, including five points from Peczuh, helped open a 56-29 advantage for the Brewers with 3:30 to go in the frame. Layups from Barringer and Katie Frederick helped, but a trey from junior guard Ryan DeOrio (Collegeville, PA) made it 63-38 heading into the fourth.

A 5-0 run kicked off the final quarter of play and the Brewers continued to hold a 30+ point advantage through the frame. A layup from Olivia Middleton cut the lead to 75-45 with 2:54 on the clock, and she hit a pair of free throws with 24 seconds to go, but the VC defense prevailed.

Vassar was paced by a game-high 17 points from Peczuh, who also added six boards, three assists, two blocks and three steals. Nick posted a double-double of 14 points and 13 rebounds, adding two assists and a steal, while Cenan drained in 14 points, five caroms, three assists and three steals. DeOrio rounded out the double-figure scorers with 12 points.

For St. Lawrence, McCann drained 10 points with an assist, a block and a steal, while Barringer added eight points and seven boards. Frederick and Middleton each posted six points as Frederick also added seven boards with an assist, a block and two steals.

The Brewers last appeared in the Liberty League Championship game on March 1, 2014, winning the league championship and a berth into the NCAA Tournament with a 64-60 win against St. Lawrence. Sunday's match-up will mark the third meeting of the season between the Brewers and the Bombers with Ithaca holding a 2-0 advantage.
