POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – Senior captain
Sophie Nick poured in a double-double of 15 points and 12 rebounds to help lead Vassar College past St. Lawrence University, 56-51, in Liberty League action on Friday night at the Athletics and Fitness Center Gymnasium. With the victory, the Brewers moved to 7-4 and 3-1 in conference play, while the Saints are now 6-5 and 2-2 in the league.
In addition to Nick (Denver, CO), who also added two assists, a block and a steal, VC saw senior captain
Isa Peczuh (Willington, CT) post 15 points with seven boards, two assists and two steals. Sophomore
Sarah Gillooly (Stow, MA) chipped in with a career-high 14 points and a game-best three assists, while junior
Natalie Pettirossi (Weston, MA) had seven rebounds and a steal.
For the Saints, sophomore Ava McCann (Binghamton, NY) scored a game-high 16 points and junior Katie Frederick (Sunapee, NH) recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 11 points and a game-best 17 rebounds. Sophomore Dylan Watkiss (Phoenix, AZ) rounded out the top three scorers with 10 points and freshman Olivia Barringer (Voorheesville, NY) finished with seven rebounds for SLU.
With Vassar owning a 23-15 lead at halftime, both teams came out firing in the third quarter. A Frederick jumper early in the frame cut the Brewers lead to 27-23, but back-to-back three pointers from Gillooly and Peczuh pushed VC back out to a 10-point (35-25) advantage.
A pair of free throw makes from junior
Skylar Schmid (Natick, MA) were followed by a trey from freshman
Emily Tincher (Pleasanton, CA) to give Vassar a 40-27 edge at the 2:50 mark. Despite a pair of three's from McCann to end the quarter, the Saints headed into the final frame down by 11 (44-33).
The visiting Saints came on strong in the final quarter, owning an 18-12 scoring edge over the home Brewers for the frame. A three from freshman Olivia Middleton (Barrington, RI) was key to making it a five-point contest (53-48) with 3:42 on the clock, but Peczuh's fourth trey of the game, along with consistent free-throw shooting down the stretch helped the Brewers hold on for victory.
Vassar returns to the court on Saturday, welcoming Clarkson at 2pm in the AFC Gym. St. Lawrence also returns tomorrow at Bard at 2pm.
