SCRANTON, PA (September 7, 2019) - Behind a goal in the second half from junior forward Ally Thayer, the Vassar women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw in double-overtime at the University of Scranton on Saturday at Weiss Field. With the draw, Scranton moves to 0-1-2 overall, while Vassar went to 1-1-1 with the result.
To open play, the homestanding Royals came out aggressive and on their second shot of the game, cashed in, as sophomore Steph Lowrey (Bridgewater, NJ) played a cross from fellow sophomore Grace Elliott (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) into the back of the net to give Scranton the early 1-0 lead. For the rest of the period, the lead held, as Scranton outshot Vassar, 7-2, to go into intermission up by a goal on the visiting Brewers.
In the second half, however, Vassar kept possession on their own end to start the period. Finally, in the 66th minute, the Brewers scored, as junior
Ally Thayer (Rochester, NY) made a steal and scored from the top of the box to tie the game up at 1-1. For the rest of regulation, both teams had chances, but could not convert the teams headed into the extra sessions.
In the first overtime frame, Scranton took four shots, but could not find the back of the net on all each chances (the lone shot by the Royals on frame in the first overtime was saved). In the second OT, only two shots total were taken by both teams (one each), neither of which was on goal. After 110 minutes, a winner would not be decided on the day, and the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
Overall, Scranton outshot Vassar in the draw, 18-12 and held a 4-2 edge on corner kicks. In goal, sophomore Amanda Steinberg (Ronkonkoma, NY) made five saves to preserve the tie for the Royals. For Vassar, junior
Fiona Walsh (Hackettstown, NJ) recorded eight saves.
The University of Scranton women's soccer team returns to action on Wednesday, as they host Marywood in another non-conference match at Weiss Field. Action starts at 7 p.m. Vassar is back at home on Wednesday as well, hosting Western Connecticut State at 4pm on Gordon Field.
