POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - Senior midfielder
Savannah Cutler scored in the 86th minute to power the Vassar College women's soccer team past Western Connecticut State University, 3-2 on Wednesday afternoon. With the victory, the Brewers move to 2-1-1 on the young season, while the Colonials are now 1-3-1 overall.
Locked in a 2-2 tie with less than four minutes to play, freshman midfielder
Violet Munnelly (Valley Cottage, NY) fed a pass in to Cutler (Deer Park, TX), who sent it in to the back of the net past West Conn goalie Karly Martin (Bristol, CT).
The visitors opened the game's scoring in the 16th minute after sophmore forward Kaleigh Panek (Shelton, CT) converted on a solid effort. Carrying the ball into the right side of the box, Panek deked around a Vassar defender attempting the tackle, firing a shot into the high left corner over the shoulder of Brewers keeper
Fiona Walsh (Hackettstown, NJ).
The score remained 1-0 until the 51st minute as Vassar evened things up. Cutler sent a long cross in to the middle to sophomore forward
Emma Tanner (Florence, MA). Battling with a defender and the goalie, Tanner was able to get the touch on for the equalizer. Less than two minutes later, Tanner helped VC move ahead with a header up over a Colonials defender. The ball landed on the foot of sophomore midfielder
Gabi Tulk (Chicago, IL), who fired it in past the goalie on the right.
Despite the momentum, the Brewers were unable to hold off Western Connecticut as freshman midfielder Myah Croze (Bristol, CT) found the ball after Walsh punched the ball out off a corner attempt. Settling it from about 25 yards out, Croze launched her shot into the high left corner to knot the game at 2-all.
Vassar dominated the possession for the majority of the contest, holding a 15-7 margin in shots. The Brewers also owned a 5-2 clip in corner kicks. In goal, Walsh earned the win after posting two saves on the day. Martin shouldered the loss with four stops.
The Brewers return to action on Saturday at 2pm when they travel to Oneonta State. Western Connecticut State hosts Western New England on Saturday as well at 2pm.
