GENEVA, NY - It was a solid start at the ITA Northeast Regional Championships for the Vassar College men's tennis team, who saw three singles players advance out of the first round, while one doubles pair also earned a victory.
Vassar opened in singles action with senior
Jeremy Auh as he posted a 6-3, 6-3 victory over RIT's Verosh Jayanetti. He advanced into the next round, but shouldered a tough 6-3, 6-3 loss to Matt Michibata from The College of New Jersey.
Sophomore Matthew Yee was also victorious in his opening round, earning a 6-2, 6-3 win against Hamilton's Joe Reiner. Despite the momentum, Yee was unable to get past Skidmore's Noah Williamson in the next round, shouldering a 6-3, 6-1 loss.
Junior
David Gandham was next to face Rensselaer's Eddie Wu, earning a 6-3, 6-1 victory. He then suffered a heartbreaking 7-6 (7-6), 6-4 defeat at the hands of Skidmore's JT Wynne. Senior
Allen Sokolov also competed for the Brewers in singles action, shouldering a 6-1, 6-3 loss to Skidmore's Brendan Jimenez.
Doubles action saw Yee and junior
Nicolas Demaria post an 8-1 opening victory against Scranton's Tarquin McGurrin and Nathan Tauber. The pair then squared-off against Hobart's Kaan Ayman and Harry Lyu, falling by a tight 8-5 margin.
Also competing in doubles were the duo of Sokolov and Auh, who took on Rensselaer's Dylan Payne and Zach Ebenfeld, but fell by an 8-4 margin.
