POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Vassar men's soccer team scored twice in the final five minutes of play, but it was not enough as the Brewers lost 2-3 to the visiting Knights on Wednesday afternoon. Freshman
Kyle Lopes (El Dorado Hills, CA) scored his first-career goal at the 85
th minute and then freshman
Ryan Lane (Santa Monica, CA) scored again in the final minute. Berkeley's Amadou Sy found the back of the net twice.
With the loss, Vassar slips to 4-4-1 overall and Berkeley moves to 5-3-1.
Despite the score, the Brewers controlled the game, outshooting the Knights 28-8 and holding a 12-2 corner kick advantage. Berkeley only took three shots in the first half and their last one proved to be the most effective. Sy found the ball close to the Brewers' net and slipped the shot past
Luke Lefeber (Hoboken, NJ) to put the Knights up 1-0.
Vassar played even more aggressive in the second, taking 18 shots. Chances were there, but the offense could not capitalize on any miscues by the Knights' defense. At the 67
th minute, Berkeley scored after a free kick positioned at the top of the Vassar box. Tcharly fired the ball straight down the middle for the Knights' second score. Senior
Henrik Olsson (Tokyo, Japan) nearly cut the lead at 70:12, but Berkeley's Dario Cruz-Sepulveda was there to deflect the shot. Lopes got Vassar on the board after he collected the ball off an
Andrew Goldsmith (Princeton, NJ) deflected header to cut the lead to 2-1.
The Knights would score once again two minutes later after Sy beat Lefeber to the ball outside the Brewers' box. Sy then scored on the open net opportunity. Vassar scored at 89:15 when Lane found the ball off a
Garrett Lusk (Arlington, VA) corner kick. In the scramble, Lane collected the ball and scored from three yards out. Time was not on Vassar's side, and one more shot attempt was turned away by Cruz-Sepulveda in the final seconds.
Lefeber had two saves in goal, while Cruz-Sepulveda had 10.
Vassar returns to Liberty League play this Saturday by traveling to Union for a 2 p.m. contest.
