POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - Action continued at the 2019 ITA Northeast Regional Championships on Sunday, hosted by William Smith College. It was a day that saw singles action dominate as the schedule was slightly shook up with freshman
Miriam Gandham advancing to the semifinals.
Following an outstanding effort on day one of regionals action, 10th-seeded Gandham continued to impress on Sunday, opening with a 6-2, 6-2 win against Skidmore's Maya Lai in the round of 16. Quarterfinals action saw her battle against NYU's Anastasiia Balyk and the rookie powered her way to a 6-4, 6-2 win against Balyk - who was the tournament's ninth-seeded player.
Her outstanding efforts will now see her play in the ITA Semifinals, taking on 14th-seeded Coco Kulle from NYU, who earned her spot in the semis following a win over Skidmore's Dea Koiava.
Gandham is now 4-0 on the weekend with today's two wins, coupled with victories over Ithaca's Alexandra Dyszewski and Union's Megan Brown on Saturday.
In doubles quarterfinals action, Gandham and junior captain
Sarra Yekta faced the TCNJ duo of rookies Jenny Landells and Charlotte Roarty, earning an 8-2 victory to move into the semifinals. They then squared-off against NYU's Anastasiia Balyk and Anna Maria Buraya. Despite solid momentum, the Brewers duo was unable to advance, falling by an 8-2 margin to the Violets' pair - who are the top-seeded team in the doubles ITA field.
Consolation action on the day saw
Melina Stavropoulos record a 6-2 singles win over TCNJ's Ariella Shlugleyt. She then went on to defeat Marilena Karadimou of Union, 6-5 (7-4). Unfortunately her day came to an end in a 6-4 loss to William Smith's Maggie Bonomo. Yekta also played in the consolation singles round, earning a 6-4 victory against Union's Karadimou.
