Women's Volleyball Splits in Saturday Quad; Defeats Medaille

Brewers fall to Nazareth but rebound for 3-1 win over Mavericks

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - It was a wild Saturday of action as the Vassar College women's volleyball team continued action at Kenyon Hall with a quad match. The Brewers opened the day with a tough 3-1 loss to Nazareth College, but rebounded with a 3-1 victory over Medaille College. The day's other squad, Montclair State, finished a perfect 3-0 with victories over both the Golden Flyers and Mavericks on Saturday. Vassar moves to 4-9 on the season with the split.

In the opening match against the Golden Flyers, the Brewers kicked things off with a 25-17 set win. VC dominated to open the frame, jumping out to a 7-2 advantage behind kills from sophomore Sara Ehnstrom and senior Colette Cambey. Nazareth cut the gap to five (11-6) on a strike by senior Danielle Synowski, but Cambey answered once again for the six-point spread (12-6).

Vassar limited the Golden Flyers to just six more points in the frame, capitalizing on two kills each from Ehnstrom and sophomore Claire Basler-Chang to wrap up the set win.

The Golden Flyers rallied to defeat the host school in four sets in the first match by scores of 13-25, 25-18, 26-24, 25-21. They dropped the second match in three sets by scores of 25-17, 25-19, 25-21. Combined with Friday's five-set win over Medaille, the Golden Flyers won two of three weekend matches and are 6-5 overall.

Nazareth recovered from the first set drop to take the second behind four kills apiece by Synowski and freshman Paiton Basinski. Senior Delaney Martin powered the Golden Flyers to victory in the third set, recording five of her kills in the third set, including the set-clinching spike on the 26th point. She then went on to add four more kills in the final set, helping Nazareth complete the win, 17-25, 25-18, 26-24, 25-21.

Martin and Synowski each had 12 kills to lead the way. In addition, Synowski added five aces, while Basinski had five aces and eight kills. Junior Jessica Barry posted 31 assists as sophomore McKenzie Hart added 20 digs.

The Brewers were led by Ehnstrom with 10 kills, 17 assists, two service aces and seven digs. Basler-Chang chipped in nine kills with an ace, a block assist and team-best 17 digs, while sophomore Madison Wilson recorded 18 saves. Senior Jennifer Kerbs notched three block assists.

Vassar looked to rebound in the final match of the evening, taking on Medaille for the second time this season. The Mavericks took the opener during the season-opening Haverford Tournament by a 3-2 margin, but the Brewers fought back this time around.

Following an opening set, which saw the visitors grab a 25-23 victory, Vassar rebounded in the second frame for the 25-17 win. The Brewers trailed early in the stanza, but flipped the script as Jamie Kesten laid down a kill to tie things at 11-all. The squad's began a back-and-forth point battle until VC opened things up with a 7-0 run. Ehnstrom and Cambey each laid down a pair of kills in the stretch.

The third set was another close affair until the 14th point as the Brewers used a 5-0 run to grab a 12-6 lead. Medaille battled back, closing the gap to a single point (19-18), but three straight from Vassar, including an ace from Wilson gave the Brewers a 22-18 advantage on its way to the 25-20 set victory.

In what proved to be the final set of the match, it was yet another close battle. Vassar opened an early lead once more, but Medaille battled back to grab a 6-5 advantage behind a kill from Kaileigh Carroll. The two teams continued to match point-for-point, neither side managing more than a two-point lead through the remainder of the frame. The Mavericks took advantage of a service error by VC to tie it at 23-all, but a kill from Cambey and a service ace by freshman Kasey Drake sealed the match win in four.

Four Brewers reached double figures in kills for the match, paced by Basler-Chang and Ehnstrom who each had 15 kills. Basler-Chang added 19 digs, while Ehnstrom posted 14 digs, 28 assists and a block assist. Cambey had 13 kills and Kerbs added 11 kills, 12 digs, an ace and a block assist. Wilson also had 28 assists with two aces, while sophomore Claire Bialek posted a match-best 30 digs.
