GENEVA, N.Y. – The Vassar College women's tennis team began play at the annual Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Regional Championships on Saturday. One Brewer in
Miriam Gandham (Ann Arbor, MI) advanced to the singles round of 16, while the doubles tandem of Gandham and
Sarra Yekta (Las Vegas, NV) move to the doubles quarterfinals.
Gandham first defeated Ithaca's Alexandra Dyszewski 6-0, 6-2 and then bested Megan Brown of Union 6-1, 6-0 in the second round. She will play Skidmore's Maya Lal on Sunday.
Frances Cornwall (Poway, CA),
Tara Edwards (Littleton, CO), and
Tatum Blalock (Austin, TX) all went 1-1 in singles play. Cornwall opened with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Union's Marilena Karadimou before falling to NYU. Edwards pulled off the 6-4, 6-0 victory against Allie Perron of William Smith, but dropped the 6-2, 6-2 decision to NYU's Anastasiia Balyk.
In the first round, Blalock won 6-0, 6-3 over Hamilton's Sarah Bargamian. She then had a hard-fought four-hour long second round match against TCNJ's Liya Davidov - the 5th-seeded player in the singles field - where she forced three sets. Blalock won the first 7-6, but fell 7-6 and 10-3 in the next two.
In doubles play, Gandham and Yekta won 8-3 in their first match against Skidmore. They then edged NYU 8-7 in the second round and look to face TCNJ on Sunday. Cornwall and Edwards swept Brockport 8-0 in the first round, but were tripped up 8-6 in the second to Skidmore.
On Sunday, the singles round of 16 and quarterfinals will be held, along with the doubles quarterfinals and semifinals. Action begins at 8 a.m.
