Women's Soccer Powers Past Knights, 4-0

Longo and Tanner notch three points to pace Brewers past Mount Saint Mary

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - The Vassar College women's soccer team broke open a scoreless game with four second-half goals to claim a 4-0 win over Mount Saint Mary College on Saturday at Gordon Field. With the victory, the Brewers move to 3-3-1 on the season, while the Knights are now 1-6-0.

Following an opening stanza, which saw the homestanding Brewers own an 8-5 margin, VC broke the game wide open mid-way through the second half. Sophomore forward Emma Tanner (Florence, MA) got things going in the 60th minute after she dribbled down the left side, crossing the ball into the middle. Junior Emily Longo (Westborough, MA) was there, drilling the ball in past Knights' keeper KellyAnn Platt (Staten Island, NY) for the 1-0 lead.

Vassar capitalized less than two minutes later, this time on a score by Tanner, who collected a feed on a ball sent up by sophomore midfielder Gabi Tulk (Chicago, IL). It was a quick one-timer into the left corner to make it a 2-0 advantage for the home team. The Brewers, who owned an 18-2 edge in shots for the frame, continued to press into the 79th minute as Longo fed the ball into center from the top left of the box. Sophomore midfielder Madio Wallner (Incline Village, NV) was there and banked it past the goalie in a 1-on-1 effort.

Freshman Violet Munnelly (Valley Cottage, NY) wrapped up the scoring for VC in the 85th minute. After the ball went off multiple players just short of the neutral zone, the midfielder stole the loose ball of a Knight defender and took several steps in before ripping a long shot off into the back of the net.

For the contest, the Brewers owned a 26-7 advantage in shots, including a 12-2 edge on goal. VC also had a 5-2 clip in corner kicks. In goal, Vassar junior Fiona Walsh (Hackettstown, NJ) notched two saves over 68:34 minutes of play. Senior Camelia Manring (Indianapolis, IN) came on in relief, not having to make a stop in the final 21:26 of the contest. For Mount Saint Mary, Platt finished with eight total saves.

Vassar returns to action on Tuesday when it heads to Hoboken, NJ to battle Stevens Institute of Technology at 7pm.
