POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – A Brewers backline that only allowed nine shots and tallied four defensive saves highlighted No. 6 Vassar field hockey's 4-0 win over Ramapo on Saturday afternoon. In the team's third straight shutout, four different Brewers found the back of the net. Vassar moves to 7-0, while the visiting Roadrunners drop to 3-5.  Â
Vassar got on the board midway through the first quarter after four consecutive Brewer penalty corner attempts. Junior
Grace Amell (West Hartford, CT) inserted to
Rylie Pope (San Diego, CA) at the top of the circle and she passed to
Cristina Lopez (Timonium, MD) five yards out on the left side of net. Lopez slipped the ball to
Dara Studnitzer (New City, NY), who shot between the Ramapo goalkeeper's legs. Amell managed to position herself just behind the goalie to tip the ball in for the opening score.
While the Roadrunners offense did manage to outshoot Vassar 4-3 in the first, the Brewers backline picked up two defensive saves from Lopez and
Ally Aquilina-Piscitello (Lexington, MA) following a Ramapo corner at the 13
th minute. Senior goalkeeper
Liz Rotolo (Lebanon, NJ) also deflected a shot in the Roadrunners' attack. Â
A scoreless second quarter came next with Aquilina-Piscitello deflecting two more Ramapo shots on goal, including one in the final 50 seconds of the half. Aquilina-Piscitello finished with three defensive saves and now has seven this season.
Vassar went on to outshoot Ramapo 7-0 in the third quarter, but it was not until 42:32 that the Brewers would score again. Lopez took a penalty corner insertion from Carina D'souza (Mountain Top, PA) and quickly dished to freshman
Avery Bauman (Westbrook, CT). The rookie took her chance in the scramble and fired the shot for her first-career goal. With the score 2-0, Vassar scored again at the 45
th minute in another penalty corner attempt. D'souza inserted again and positioned the ball to Pope at the top of the circle. Pope then shot straight into the back of the net as time expired to go up 3-0 going into the fourth.
The Brewers scored early again off a corner early in the fourth. Senior
Stephanie Palma (Manhasset, NY) passed the ball to Pope, who dished it back to Palma for the goal.
In goal, Rotolo finished with three saves and recorded her second shutout of the year. Pope led the game with six shots with four shots on goal.
Vassar has a one-game road trip to Hartwick on Wed. Sept. 25 next. Game starts at 4 p.m. in Oneonta, NY.
