POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – The final day of the 2019 Vassar Scramble took place under sunny skies on Sunday with a number of solid performances across the board. The Brewers posted a record of 12-4 on the day in singles action once again versus opponents from Connecticut College, New Paltz and New York University.
In the opening round of action, junior
Frances Cornwall (Poway, CA) got things going with a hard-fought 6-2, 5-7, 10-4 win against NYU junior Anna Maria Buraya (Toronto, Canada). Sophomore
Melina Stavropoulos then gutted out a victory of her own to open singles action, besting Conn College's Tsang by a 3-6, 6-2, 10-6 margin.
Senior
Ashley Fair (Laguna Beach, CA) then faced Conn's Scully, shouldering a tough 6-0, 6-3 loss, while rookie
Tatum Blalock (Austin, TX) countered against Conn's Simon for a 6-0, 6-1 victory. Freshman
Miriam Gandham (Ann Arbor, MI) impressed in her opening effort, defeating NYU's Coco Kulle (Vienna, Austria), 6-1, 6-4.
Vassar sophomore
Cara Kizilbash (Pensacola, FL) then took on Conn's Kenny, earning a 6-3, 6-1 win, while freshman
Jade Wilkinson (George Town, Grand Cayman) powered her way to a 6-3, 3-6, 10-7 victory over NYU rookie Lucy Avant (Acworth, GA) to conclude round one play for the Brewers.
Second round action saw Stavropoulos earn a 6-2, 6-1 victory against New Paltz junior Jenna Grandville (Tappan, NY), while Gandham captured her second win of the day with a 6-2, 6-0 score against Conn's Scully.
Cornwall faced Conn's Zuckerberg, earning her second win of the day with a 6-0, 6-1 score. Edwards took on NYU's Buraya, shouldering a tough 6-2, 6-1 defeat. Junior captain
Sarra Yekta (Las Vegas, NV) recorded a 6-2, 6-0 victory against Conn's Falvey, while Wilkinson surged to a 6-2, 6-1 win against New Paltz freshman Onalee Batcheller (Westhampton Beach, NY).
Kizilbash was unable to complete the sweep on the day, shouldering a tough 6-2, 6-4 defeat at the hands of NYU senior captain Rupa Ganesh (San Jose, CA). Wrapping up the day's action for the Brewers was Fair as she bested New Paltz sophomore Kathleen Mangan (New York, NY) by a 6-2, 6-0 margin.
For the weekend, the Brewers posted a combined record of 21-6.
Vassar is back in action next weekend when it travels to Geneva, NY, to compete at the ITA Northeast Regional Championships. Action begins on Saturday and runs through Monday on the campus of William Smith College.
