Men's Tennis Opens 2019-20 Slate in Solid Fashion

Brewers post strong results at season-opening Conn College Tournament

NEW LONDON, CT - It was a solid season opener for the Vassar College men's tennis team, which took part in the Connecticut College Invitational on Saturday. The Brewers saw a number of outstanding efforts in both singles and doubles play.

The day opened with doubles action, which saw the first doubles pair of Allen Sokolov and Jeremy Auh fall to Conn College's Guillermo Rincon and Julian Tien, 8-4. The pair then went on to play Holy Cross's Will Chen and Alexander Ruenhorst, falling by an 8-3 margin. The second doubles pairing of Mathew Yee and Nicolas Demaria was next up, squaring off against Coast Guard's Evans and Chris Lansing. Despite a hard-fought effort, the Brewers duo fell by an 8-7 margin, going on to play the Holy Cross pairing of Matthew Slowinski and Declan O'Flynn. The Crusaders pair topped VC by an 8-7 margin.

In third doubles, Vassar's David Gandham and William Hwang bested Conn College's Zak Danz and Brian Gould by an 8-1 score. The pair unfortunately lost to Trinity's William Frigerio and Tanner Boyle, 8-5.

Singles action was a flurry of matches, beginning with Sokolov from the first flight as he faced Conn's Rincon. The Camels top player came away with a 6-4, 6-1 victory. Sokolov then went on to play Holy Cross's Connor Nelson, falling 6-3, 6-2. From two, Gandham defeated Chen from Holy Cross, 6-3, 6-7, 14-12, then went on to beat Wheaton's Ian Tracy, 7-5, 6-0.

Yee competed at third singles, taking on Conn's Tien in the opener. He pulled out a 7-6, 6-0 victory, advancing to play Trinity's Christopher Bilicic. In that match, Yee gutted out a 7-6, 6-7, 10-1 win. From four, Auh shouldered a tough loss to Conn's Aaron Fleishman, 6-4, 6-2, but rebounded for a 6-2, 6-2 win against Wheaton's Ned Roosevelt. At five, Demaria beat Holy Cross's Slowinski, 6-1, retired, and then went on for an outstanding 3-6, 6-3, 10-2 win against Trinity's Charles Kilborn.

From six, Hwang suffered a tough 3-6, 6-3, 10-8 lost to Wheaton's Zach Strempel, but went on to best Conn's Dewey Komishane, 6-4, 6-2. Finally at seven, Vassar's Mihajlo Ivanovic defeated Coast Guard's Jacob Schellman, 6-1, 6-1. He went on to beat Trinity's Alfred Auersperg, 6-3, 6-3.

The Brewers return to action on Saturday when they travel to Bard College for a 1pm Liberty League showdown against the Raptors.
