SCRAMBLE DAY 1 RESULTS (PDF)
POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - It was an outstanding start to the 2019-20 season for the Vassar College women's tennis team as the squad posted a 9-3 record at the non-scoring Vassar Scramble. The Brewers welcomed squads from New Paltz, Connecticut College and New York University.
The day's action saw three rounds of doubles, played inside Walker Field House due to rain. In the opening round of the day, Vassar's duo of junior
Frances Cornwall (Poway, CA) and senior captain
Tara Edwards (Littleton, CO) posted an 8-2 victory over Connecticut College's Kenny and Scully.
Junior captain
Sarra Yekta (Las Vegas, NV) and freshman
Miriam Gandham (Ann Arbor, MI) then squared-off against NYU senior captain Rupa Ganesh (San Jose, CA) and junior Kate Shaffer (Ann Arbor, MI). It came down to a tie-breaker as the Brewers' duo edged out an 8-7 (7) victory.
Wrapping up round one for VC was sophomore
Melina Stavropoulos (Atherton, CA) and freshman
Tatum Blalock (Austin, TX), who took on Conn College's pair of Simon and Tang. Vassar's duo earned an 8-4 victory.
Round two of action saw freshman
Jade Wilkinson (George Town, Grand Cayman) and senior
Ashley Fair (Laguna Beach, CA) battle freshman Karina Jensrud (Olso, Norway) and sophomore Ana Leonard (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) from NYU. The Violets duo came out the victor by an 8-1 margin.
Cornwall and Edwards teamed up once again, facing NYU freshman Anastasiia Balyk (Odessa, Ukraine) and junior Anna Maria Buraya (Toronto, Canada). Despite their round one win, the Vassar duo was unable to get the win, falling by a narrow 8-6 margin.
Gandham and Yekta returned to the court and recorded an outstanding win, besting NYU senior captain Judy Kam (Beijing, China) and classmate Coco Kulle (Vienna, Austria) by an 8-7 (4) margin. Next up was Stavropoulos and Blalock, who powered their way to an 8-3 win over freshmen Lucy Avant (Acworth, GA) and Jensrud.
Vassar sophomore
Cara Kizilbash (Pensacola, FL) and Wilkinson then teamed up to take on Simon and Tang from Conn College, earning an 8-4 victory. Finally in the round, Vassar's Fair and NYU freshman Claire Huang (Wilton, CT) teamed up to take on New Paltz sophomores Alex Chimenti (Smithtown, NY) and Kathleen Mangan (New York, NY). Fair and Huang posted an 8-0 victory.
Round three of doubles saw Cornwall and Edwards post an 8-2 win over Simon and Tang from Conn. College. Gandham and Yekta shouldered a tough 8-7 (4) loss to Buraya and Balyk, followed by Stavropoulos and Blalock posting an 8-5 victory over New Paltz senior Victoria Zezula (Ridgewood, NY) and junior Jenna Grandville (Tappan, NY).
"Although there was no sun today, Vassar shined on the court in day one of the annual Vassar Scramble Tournament played in Walker Field House on the Vassar campus. With four doubles pairs playing three matches each, Vassar posted a record of 9 wins and 3 losses.
