Women's Soccer Falls to NYU in Home Opener

Violets score three second half goals to rally past Brewers, 3-1

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 1, 2019) - Three second half goals paced the New York University women's soccer team past Vassar College in non-conference action on Sunday afternoon at Gordon Field. The Violets move to 2-0-0 on the season, while the homestanding Brewers slip to 1-1-0 on the young season.

Despite a 6-3 advantage in shots for the opening half, Vassar found itself unable to hold off the Violets as senior forward Isabella de Almagro (Pembroke Pines, FL) corralled the ball in the Vassar zone and took off on an open run. Brewers' goalie Fiona Walsh (Hackettstown, NJ) came out to play the ball, but de Almagro ducked left and sent the ball into the open net from 20 yards out in the 48th minute.

Vassar battled back in the 63rd minute as junior defender Emma Trasatti (Berlin, NJ) sent a perfectly placed corner kick into the middle of the box. Sophomore midfielder Gabi Tulk (Chicago, IL) was there to tip the ball in and tie the score at 1-all. The stalemate proved shortlived as NYU forward Ellie Marks (Seattle, WA) crossed the ball to senior forward Alex Benedict (Avon, CT), who ripped a high shot over the reach of Walsh in the 66th minute.

The Brewers saw their best opportunity to tie the contest midway through as freshman midfielder Violet Munnelly (Valley Cottage, NY) sent a bullet shot in right in front of the net. NYU anticipated the pass as a defender was there to block Munnelly's shot with her body.

NYU continued to hold the 2-1 advantage until the 88th minute as the Violets added an insurance goal. Junior forward Sam March (Glastonbury, CT) corralled a perfect feed from rookie midfielder Julie Beedle (Doylestown, PA), dribbling it in to beat the goalie on her left side.

The visitors held a 10-9 advantage in shots for the contest, while the Brewers owned a 5-1 clip in corner kicks.

In goal, NYU junior Meghan Marhan (Glen Ridge, NJ) recorded four saves to improve to 2-0-0 on the year. Walsh shouldered her first loss, making two stops.

Vassar returns to action on Saturday, September 7 when it travels to Pennsylvania for a 2pm match at the University of Scranton. NYU is also in action next Saturday, facing St. John Fisher at 2pm in the Stevens Institute of Technology Engineering Cup in Hoboken, NJ.
