HAVERFORD, PA – (August 31, 2019) – The Vassar College women's volleyball team opened its 2019 slate on Saturday at the Haverford College Invitational. The Brewers shouldered a pair of tough losses to kick-off the year, suffering a 3-2 defeat to Medaille College, before falling 3-0 to the host Fords in the final contest on day one.
In the opening match of the day for VC, the Brewers took on the Mavericks of Medaille. Vassar opened with a 25-19 victory for the 1-0 match lead, but the Mavericks rebounded to take a 2-1 lead following a narrow 27-25 edge in the second set and a 25-23 win in set three.
Vassar battled back once more to force the match to a 2-2 tie, grabbing a 25-23 win in set four. It would be the Mavericks to take the win though as Medaille earned a 16-14 win for the match victory. More individual statistics will be available soon.
In the final match of the day against the host Fords, the Brewers saw sophomore hitter
Claire Basler-Chang (Amherst, MA) record a team-best six kills, adding seven digs as well. Sophomore setter
Sara Ehnstrom (Kaneohe, HI) posted nine assists with three kills and six digs, while first year defensive specialist
Kasey Drake (Sneads Ferry, NC) recorded a team-high 14 digs. Senior hitter
Jennifer Kerbs (Sacramento, CA) led the team at the net with two block solos to go along with three kills and two digs.
For Haverford, Dina Kosyagin had a match-high 11 kills, while Sara Matsumura posted a match-best 18 digs. Sydney Miller added 30 assists to pace all players, while Julia Gallagher-Teske had three block solos and two block assists.
Vassar wraps-up action at the Haverford Invitational on Sunday when they face Wells College (10am) and Eastern University (12pm).
