Women's Volleyball Splits on Day 2 at Haverford

Brewers defeat Wells, 3-0; Shoulder 3-1 Loss to Eastern

HAVERFORD, PA (September 1, 2019) - Day two of action at the 2019 Haverford Volleyball Invitational came to a close on Sunday as Vassar College posted a split on the final day. The Brewers defeated Wells College by a 3-0 margin in the opener, but fell to Eastern University, 3-1 in game two. VC is now 1-3 on the young season.

In the opening match of the day against the Express, the Brewers powered their way to victory with a 25-22, 25-16, 25-23 score line.

VC saw sophomore hitter Claire Basler-Chang (Amherst, MA) once again lead the charge, recording eight kills with eight digs and three service aces. Classmate and setter Sara Ehnstrom (Kaneohe, HI) added seven kills with a game-high 18 assists and match-best 12 kills, while fellow setter Madison Wilson (Plano, TX) added five kills, 17 assists, two aces and 11 digs.

Wells was paced by Jackie Allen, who recorded a game-best 15 kills with five digs and a game-high four service aces.

Game two against Eastern was a battle back for the Brewers. Trailing 2-0, VC broke through a number of ties throughout the third stanza. Down 21-24 late, the Brewers earned the final five points, including a pair of kills from Basler-Chang to take the set, 26-24.

Despite the momentum, Eastern rallied for the victory in the fourth by a 25-15.

Vassar was led by Basler-Chang with 13 kills, three aces and 15 digs. Ehnstrom added seven kills and 18 assists with seven digs, while senior hitter Colette Cambey (Hillsborough, NC) had eight kills. Freshman defensive specialist Kasey Drake (Sneads Ferry, NC) added 22 digs.

For Eastern, Cecilia Bauer and Caroline Shelby led all players with 16 kills. Morgan Kline had a game-high 31 assists, while Katie Stenby posted 24 digs - also a game-best.

Vassar returns to the court on Saturday, September 7 when it hosts a tri-match at Kenyon Hall. The Brewers will face Muhlenberg College at 11am and close out the day against Morrisville State College at 4pm. The middle match between the Mules and the Mustangs will begin at 1:30pm.
